The exciting conclusion to last night’s post about Ryan and Steve Scalise forcing a floor vote on the dopey “abolish ICE” legislation being pushed by lefties.
"We know Speaker Ryan is not serious about passing our 'Establishing a Humane Immigration Enforcement System Act,' so members of Congress, advocacy groups, and impacted communities will not engage in this political stunt."

In other words, the bill was a stunt meant to virtue-signal to the base about the left’s hostility to immigration enforcement. They got ahead of themselves in their rush to pander and Republicans tried to make them pay. How outrageous that the GOP would try to divide the Democratic Party by pushing this … Democratic bill.
Why they drafted it in the first place, I have no idea. They had to know Republicans might seize on it and force a vote, gaining mileage from the results when centrist Dems pissed off the base by voting no and left-wing Dems pissed off swing voters by voting yes. Progressives would have been better off treating abolishing ICE as something aspirational, to be taken up if and only if the House is back in Democratic hands.
I hate to break it to Pocan and the rest but a floor vote right now with Ryan at the helm may be as close as he ever gets to putting his colleagues on record about his idea. If you think Republican leaders are chilly about abolishing ICE, wait until Speaker Pelosi takes charge and starts gearing up for 2020, knowing that it’ll help Democrats in the Rust Belt if they can at least pretend for two years that they’re not in favor of open borders. The “abolish ICE” act is going away for awhile, perhaps never to return. If Pocan wants back in this conversation, he should get cracking on a more politically palatable “reform ICE” act instead.
In lieu of an exit question, make sure you’ve read Ed’s rundown of the latest polling on immigration, particularly in battleground states. Hoo boy. Expect the well calibrated political weathervane known as Kirsten Gillibrand, who was out early among 2020 contenders in favor of abolishing ICE, to start scrambling away from it at any moment.
Reps. Mark Pocan of Wisconsin, Pramila Jayapal of Washington and Adriano Espaillat of New York introduced the Establishing a Humane Immigration Enforcement Act earlier Thursday, which would abolish ICE within one year of enactment, and also assemble a commission tasked with setting up a new immigration enforcement agency.
Hours later, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, called their bluff and announced he planned to bring the proposed “Abolish ICE” bill to the floor, reported The Hill.
The three congressmen promptly released a joint statement accusing Ryan of not taking their bill seriously, and as an act of protest, they will vote down their own legislation and instead use the opportunity to discuss Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance immigration policy and ICE.
Note to Dems. Be careful what you wish for, you now have to vote on it.
Karma is a double bladed bitch with a bad attitude.
Then why did they write it?....................
Oriechtomy performed on theee members of the Communist Party caucus by Dr McCarthy
Hey you idiot Dems, it is your bill and you should be grateful for the Republicans that are behind YOUR political stunt. Live with it, it is your bill!
RE: Then why did they write it?....................
It’s obvious — POSTURING for their rabid base.
Normally, members of a minority party publicly fume when their bills are NOT brought to a vote by the leadership of the majority. But Kevin McCarthy and Paul Ryan perhaps inspired by the way President Trump does things contrary to normal practice did the unexpected and allowed Democrats to metaphorically put up or shut up. Of course, actually shutting up in the literal sense is never an option when it comes to Trump haters, so instead they fulminate that being required to take a position on their own bill is unfair or something.
Trump should be sending them clown suits for their group picture. Better still, Tweet the picture for the world to see.
When a Democratic dog craps on the carpet, grab another Democratic dog and shove its face in the first Democratic dog’s crap.
Note I do not advocate cruelty to canines, those who do are lower than low.
Although not involved directly, this is the effect Trump style politics has had on our pols.
He, by his own actions in confronting head-on the Left and make them regret the Alinsky tactics they have used so successfully throughout the years.
I can only imagine, while he was in the nest of NYC liberal vipers he was plotting to himself “if I was____”, why I’d do______, if only I was president.
Well, concept is now reality.
BTW;
I LOVE ME SOME PRESIDENT TRUMP!!!
This sort of smack down goes way back.
Remember when Dick Nixon’s administration ended Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s draft?
Democrats are still seething at everyone involved in taking the draft issue away from them.
Schedule the vote for the day before the elections. When it fails the dem base will be so upset they won’t show up to vote. WINNING!
In addition, by forcing a floor vote they don’t get to hijack committee hearings and bring in busloads of “victims” in front of the cameras.

(Probably for the same reason the Repubs voted down Obamacare a hundred times)
Then failed when Obozo was gone.......................
If they hadn’t brought it up for a vote, Dems would be complaining they couldn’t get a vote on it.
Can’t win with these folk but glad they get to go on record on this silly idea.
Because they are mental defectives.
“We’re voting our own bill down because you’re not taking it seriously by calling for a vote”......yeah, that makes total sense. SMH
