BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A former state lawmaker from western New York has been sentenced to two months in prison for trying to cover up making unwanted sexual advances to a female staffer.

The U.S. attorney’s office says 53-year-old Marc Panepinto was also sentenced Friday in federal court in Buffalo to one year of supervised release.

The Buffalo Democrat pleaded guilty in June to a federal government corruption charges.

The charges stemmed from Panepinto’s efforts to get a staffer to keep quiet about unwanted sexual advances he made toward her while in a New York City hotel room in January 2016. Prosecutors say he offered her money and a new job if she refused to participate in a state ethics panel investigation into the incident.

Panepinto served in the Senate in 2015 and 2016.
