Ocasio-Cortez faces ridicule for endorsing protest that would leave detained migrant children without beds

"This is what solidarity looks like"

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) faced mockery and ridicule after she endorsed a protest against migrant detention camps that would leave children without beds to sleep in.

The protest formed when Wayfair online furniture employees objected to being asked to assemble beds that were purchased by the Border Patrol in order to accommodate children in migrant detention camps.

"Wayfair workers couldn't stomach they were making beds to cage children," Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. "They asked the company to stop. CEO said no."

"Tomorrow, they're walking out," she added. "This is what solidarity looks like - a reminder that everyday people have real power, as long as we're brave enough to use it."

She posted a tweet from the protest group that claimed 547 employees "signed a petition to ask that we cease all business with border camps."

Many critics of Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that if the protest were successful, it would result in fewer detained children with beds, possibly worsening their plight.

CNBC commentator Larry Kim replied, "wouldn't sending more beds make more sense? to ensure no kid has to sleep on the floor? aren't they suffering a lot already?"

"Her logic is cold, callous, calculated and cruel," wrote David Marcus at the Federalist, "rather than compromise in the slightest with the Trump administration, AOC would see children harmed so that Trump gets a black eye and the crisis gets worse."

"Rep @AOC cheering on the effort to deprive children of comfortable beds to sleep in," responded Trump 2020 communications director Matt Wolking. "Heartless."

Presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) joined in support for the Wayfair protest through her own tweet.

"I stand with the hundreds of @Wayfair employees who are planning to stage a walkout at their Boston headquarters tomorrow," said Warren in a tweet. "The safety and well-being of immigrant children is always worth fighting for."
