Brothers implicated in Smollett attack break their silence with an astonishing statement

The brothers who are accused of being the men involved in the altercation with "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett have released a short statement that contradicts the alleged victim's account.

Chicago police sources have told various news outlets that Ola and Abel Osundairo have implicated Smollett in the attack, and that they accuse him of paying them to stage the ambush that he reported to the police.

CBS 2's Charlie De Mar obtained a short statement from the brothers on Monday.

"We are not racist," the statement read. "We are not homophobic and we are not anti-Trump. We were born and raised in Chicago and are American citizens."

The statement is problematic for Smollett on various accounts since he claimed they shouted racist and homophobic insults at him during the attack.

Police apprehended the brothers when they arrived back in the Chicago area after leaving for Nigeria.

The brothers were first identified through surveillance video on the night of the alleged attack. Police searched their home and obtained materials that could have been used to stage the attack, including bleach and ski masks.

Smollett has continued to affirm that he is a victim of a racial attack in the case. In a statement released Sunday, his lawyer appeared to deny that the reports that one of the Osundairo brothers was involved in the ambush.

One of these purported suspects was Jussie's personal trainer who he hired to ready him physically for a music video. It is impossible to believe that this person could have played a role in the crime against Jussie or would falsely claim Jussie's complicity.

The statement also cast doubt on the reports from anonymous sources from within the Chicago police department.

At present time, Jussie and his attorney's have no inclination to respond to '"unnamed" sources inside the investigation, but will continue discussions through official channels.

Police have said that if the department believed Smollett filed a false report that they would make sure he faces the consequences.
