Police release video of gunfight with man on 'reign of terror' crime spree — and he had been deported before

California police are still piecing together the events of what they call a "reign of terror" from a 36-year-old man who had already been deported from the country once.

Police say Gustavo Garcia shot a farm worker at 1 in the morning on Sunday while he was picking fruit on a ladder. The man was shot in the chest, but is expected to recover from the wound.

Garcia then committed armed robbery at the AA Gas and Grub, where he fired off some shots in the ceiling and demanded $2,000. No one was hurt at the robbery.

That evening on Sunday he shot at a woman who was sitting in her car in the parking lot of a Motel 6. She was shot in the chest area and in the arm, but her wounds are not life-threatening.

"She made eye contact with the subject, and he followed her to her parking spot, and for unbeknownst reasons, fired at her vehicle," said Tulare Police Chief Matt Machado.

Police believe he was involved in an assault with a deadly weapon and another homicide later around the same area.

They think he then fired a shot at a Shell gas station at 1:30 in the morning on Monday.

About an hour later, police say Garcia spoke to 51-year-old Rocky Paul Jones before shooting him and killing him.

At 3 in the morning, police claim that Garcia went to his ex-girlfriend's home and fired shots while threatening her. She escaped with her children unscathed.

At 5 in the morning, police attempted to stop Garcia when they recognized his vehicle, but he drove into an orchard, stole a truck from three farmworkers, and fled from police going the wrong way on the highway.

Police say he was purposely aiming to hit cars while shooting at police. Police also fired shots at him. Four persons were hospitalized over injuries sustained by Garcia attempting to ram them in his car.

Garcia's vehicle reached 100 miles per hour during the police chase.

At about 7 in the morning, Garcia's "reign of terror" ended when he struck another car, was ejected from the stolen truck, and died on the scene.

"These were not chosen targets, which makes it more dangerous," said Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux. "This person was targeting anyone that got in the way. He equally was not deterred by the acts of law enforcement. He was a violent person."
