SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2’ Coming to Switch, Plus Today’s New Releases and the Latest Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for February 24th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got the big news that you’ve already read in the title. Oops! We also have information on the next weekend event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, summaries of all of today’s new releases, and the usual lists of incoming and outgoing sales. Enjoy the calm before the storm, friends. Tomorrow’s going to be bananas. Let’s go!

‘Bravely Default II’ Spirits Join ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’

Bravely Default II is out very, very soon. In a matter of hours, really. To celebrate that release, Nintendo is adding some new spirits to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate featuring characters from the game. They’ll be joining in a brand new Spirit Board event this weekend, and like many of the events where new spirits are added, this one will go for five days instead of the usual three. It kicks off on Friday like normal, so you’ve got lots of time to add those spirits to your collection.

‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2’ Announced for Switch Release in 2021

It’s not the most surprising of things in the world, but Activision finally made it official: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 will be coming to the Nintendo Switch. The only date the publisher has given is a vague 2021 release, so it could be anywhere between a few months or several. The nice people at IGN have gotten some footage of the Switch version in action, and we’ve posted the video above so you can have a look at it. Feel free to head on over to the story on their site to reward them for their diligence in getting this lovely footage. I can’t wait to get my hands on this one as I’ve been hankering for some portable Tony Hawk of late. It looks like it will retail for a cool $39.99 USD, which is a perfectly fair price in my opinion.

New Releases

iota ($7.99)

This looks alright. You play as kind of a floating squid/eyeball creature that bounces from wall to wall through 36 levels of suffering. It’s been out on mobile and computers for a while, so you may have encountered it before. There’s nothing different in this particular version, so you can look forward to the same off-beat mechanics and punishing difficulty that won it fans on those platforms. It’s a few bucks more here than it is on mobile, but I don’t think the price difference is egregious. Grab it if you want something challenging and unconventional in an action game today.

Active Neurons 3 – Wonders of the World ($4.99)

We’re already up to three with this one, so assuming you haven’t forgotten about it entirely (and talk about your big assumptions there) you’ll probably know how this one works. It’s a puzzle game with simple mechanics, quite similar to those ice-block puzzles in other games. It throws in so many extra gimmicks and tricks that this rather familiar type of puzzle can get rather tough in a hurry. This third game piles on more levels and adds in some new twists for you to contend with. If you enjoyed the previous games, you’ll find a lot to like here. If you’ve had your fill, feel free to pass.

Retrace: Memories of Death ($7.99)

This is a brief but fairly well-made puzzle adventure game. A woman named Freya is caught reliving experiences over and over again, trying to find an escape from a horror her and her friends got caught up in. There are logic puzzles to solve, many deaths to be had, and some interesting relationships between the various characters to explore. You can see just about all it has to offer in a few hours, but I think its price is fine for what you get. Don’t come into it expecting any Corpse Party-style grisly horror, though. There is naturally a fair bit of violence but it’s mostly expressed through simple pixels. The horror here is a little more psychological and less visceral. Decent.

Night Vision ($9.99)

Aw heck, it’s Sabec. Ah, how nostalgic. Sabec used to be the kings of kusoge on the Switch, but they’ve got some fierce competition on that front these days. That said, there is one category in which Sabec will not be beat: generically titled apps that don’t do much of anything at all. And that’s what Night Vision is. It uses your Joy-Con’s IR function to show you a terrible image of whatever you point it at, all filtered up to look like Sam Fisher-vision. That’s it. No game, no interesting extra features, just a lousy filtered picture generated by an IR camera, one that you may not even use depending on which Switch you have and how you play it. Oh Sabec, you’ve still got it.

Bakery Master ($4.99)

Oh no, Piotr Skalski has fallen down the food prep game hole and can’t get out. Given this is something like the fourth game of this exact sort to release in the last week, you probably don’t need much of an explanation. You operate a food establishment. Customers come in waves with specific orders. You have to prepare them and serve them before they get impatient and leave. Do the job well and you’ll move on to the next stage. The topic of this one seems to be cakes and other baked treats. It’s reasonably well-made and cheap, but I could say that for about twenty other games precisely like this on the eShop.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Looking over today’s discounts, NIS America’s latest sale is probably the most noteworthy thing. The publisher does sales pretty often, so it’s not the most pressing thing in the world. That said, most of the games NIS America has put out on Switch are at least worth a go, so feel free to stock up and enjoy if you find yourself low on things to play for whatever reason. The outbox has plenty of treats in it, including titles from Arc System Works and Oddworld Inhabitants, so give it a good look as well.

That’s all for today, friends. We’ll be back tomorrow with what is looking to be the biggest single day of new releases we’ve had this year so far. More than twenty games are on the schedule already, and I expect at least a few stragglers. Somehow I’ll fit it all in with my regular work day and a trip to the hospital to get some stitches removed. Somehow. I hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
