It’s wild to realize that December is already upon us, and it’s time to get into gear for the holidays. While some of us cannot wait to see the back of a turbulent year, others may want to take stock of our fortune for the people we have in our lives. Gift-giving is a big part of our show of gratitude for our loved ones during this time of the year, but getting it right requires some thought. To help you get started on the shopping quest, acclaimed German watchmaker NOMOS has four gift ideas for four types of recipients among us.

For the go-getter — Club Sport neomatik petrol

A perfect all-rounder for life on the move, the Club Sport neomatik petrol is a robust and dressy sports watch. With a diameter of 37mm, the all-polished stainless steel case features a domed bezel and curved lugs. The round face has a pared-back dial design in “petrol green”, as NOMOS calls the color, featuring a radiant sunburst finish. A small seconds sub-dial sits at 6 o’clock with the logo and model name under 12 o’clock. The recessed indexes and numerals as well as the wide hands hold extra Super-LumiNova for strong luminescence in dim conditions. This time-only display offers absolute clarity for those always on the go to keep up with their schedule.

While uncomplicated on the outside, the Club Sport neomatik is highly technical on the inside. It boasts the independent brand’s innovative self-winding DUW 3001 caliber equipped with its proprietary “swing system” escapement. The signature tempered blue balance spring is visible through the optional sapphire case back. This elegantly handcrafted automatic movement is ultra-flat at 3.2mm in height. It is also extremely accurate with only 5.8% friction loss, compared to the norm of 20%. The DUW 3001 took three years to develop, and like all NOMOS calibers, it is produced at the brand’s own manufacture in Glashütte.

The sleek three-link bracelet with satin-finished outer links and high-polished center links completes the style. The quick-release spring bars in the end links and the clasp allow for strap changes and micro-adjustment without any tools. The watch is also available with a single-link bracelet or two textile strap options for different aesthetics or uses. And with a 200m water-resistance rating, the Club Sport neomatik is inspiringly sporty in both form and function. We shared a hands-on review here just this month. Options range from €2,300 to €2,880 including VAT.

For the belle of the ball — Ludwig 33 Noir

Every worthy event darling has a little black dress (or a few) in the wardrobe. A little black watch may just be the most thoughtful gift a lady could use but often overlook herself. Delicate but not girlish, the Ludwig 33 Noir is the perfect style companion to dress up for an evening at the theater, a soirée, or simply a dinner. The new ladies’ watch from NOMOS is an elegant time-only affair with a 33mm round case and a slender bezel. Three golden hands gleam against the black backdrop, which features Roman numerals, a railroad minute track, and a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock. The arching lugs are fitted with an anthracite velour leather strap to ensure a snug and comfortable fit.

Powering the “little black watch” is a high-precision, hand-wound Alpha movement with a slender construction, which is visible through the sapphire case back. The Ludwig 33 Noir is a refined timepiece that is as classy and versatile as the little black dress. The price is €1,520 including VAT.

For the neo-yuppie — Metro neomatik 41 Update

“Yuppies” is a term for the 1980s urban archetype of “young upwardly-mobile professionals”. With all things ’80s being revived, modern-day “young urban professionals” now look to old-school values while demanding authenticity in their pursuits. The Metro neomatik 41 Update brings exactly these qualities. As NOMOS CEO Uwe Ahrendt says, “It’s the product of generations’ worth of knowledge…and yet completely new.” On top of being hand-built entirely in-house, the watch has two patents to its name — the pioneering date mechanism and the peripheral date display. The DUW6101 caliber showcases the Saxon manufacture’s specialist watchmaking capability.

Housed inside a 40.5mm round case and visible through the sapphire case back, the richly-decorated mechanism with the date function added to the edge allows the watch to stay slim at 9.1mm in height. The one-of-a-kind date display has a full date wheel on show around the outer orbit of the dial.

The clean white silver-plated dial features fine hands along with delicate hour and minute markers and a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock. We have covered the watch a couple of times, including a hands-on video review here and a written review here. The Metro Update is “simultaneously clean and complex” while combining user-friendly functionality, according to the Chicago jury of the Good Design Award. The award-winning design with its understated and cosmopolitan appeal makes it a compelling gift idea for mindful urbanites. The price of the Metro neomatik 41 Update is €3,500 inclusive of VAT.

To top it off, all of these models come with beautifully crafted leather or wooden cases — ideal for a luxurious gift presentation. For more information, visit the official NOMOS website.
