Louis Moinet Mars Mission Limited Edition

Indie watchmaker Les Ateliers Louis Moinet has been releasing several cosmic-themed watches recently. Indeed, their CEO and Creative Director, Jean-Marie Schaller, loves to create bold, character-filled watches and has a fascination for everything related to the stars, mechanical wonders and cosmic art. The Louis Moinet Super Moon and Mars Mission limited editions embark on the brand’s space journey reproducing the surface of these two celestial bodies on their dials, complete with fragments of genuine meteorite.

Louis Moinet Super Moon Limited Edition

The distinctive dials – four different versions in total: two representing the Moon and two linked to Mars – of these limited-edition watches have been crafted with specific references. The Mars Mission dials, either in gold/brown or blue, were directly inspired by the first detailed photos of Mars taken in 1965 by the Mars flyby probe, the Mariner 4. The two dials of the Super Moon, in silver or anthracite, depict the first extraterrestrial view of our satellite provided by Apollo 8 in 1968. Both dials are hammered to reproduce the surface of the celestial bodies, which is enhanced by a light black patina achieved after the dials were copper or nickel-plated.

The sense of depth is reinforced by the multi-layered construction with faceted, tri-dimensional markers suspended between concentric rings. Last, these incorporate extraterrestrial material with a genuine fragment of Martian or Lunar meteorites. These are encrusted in an anodised aluminium capsule at 3 o’clock that (together with the small seconds ring) brings a pop of colour – red for Mars and blue for the Moon.

Both dials are partially skeletonised to reveal a glimpse of the beating movement and its escapement. Inside the Louis Moinet Mars Mission and Super Moon is the self-winding calibre LM45. This proprietary movement is manufactured together with movement-maker Concepto. Measuring 30.5mm in diameter, it features 22 jewels, beats at 4Hz, and provides a 48-hour power reserve. Turning the watch over, the sapphire caseback allows you to further discover its architecture and beautiful decoration with Côtes de Genève, diamond-cut angles, engravings, circular satin-finished wheels, perlage and a rotor adorned with concentric Clous de Paris hobnail pattern and the Fleur de Lys logo.

The limited-edition watches come in the brand’s Neo case with openworked lugs and a six-screw bezel. Measuring 45.4mm in diameter, it is made of 316L stainless steel. Its complex architecture is based on two vertical bridges enclosing a central container that cross the piece to accommodate the strap at each end of the lugs. The crown is emblazoned with a Fleur de Lys, the symbol of Louis Moinet. The water-resistance is rated at 50 meters.

The Louis Moinet Super Moon and Mars Mission are presented on a hand-sewn blue or black alligator leather strap with an alligator lining. The steel triple-blade folding clasp is in the shape of a curved Fleur de Lys.
