Dems voted for border fence in 2006. Just wait until you hear why one top Dem opposes border wall now.
December 15, 2018
It probably has NOTHING to do with who is president...
Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley (Ore.) was confronted Friday over apparent hypocrisy surrounding his party's opposition toward President Donald Trump's border wall.
What happened?
Speaking with CNN's Alisyn Camerota on Friday, Merkley was forced to explain why he opposes a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border when, in 2006, Democrats supported erecting a border fence. At the time, the likes of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and then-Sens. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) supported border fencing. Indeed, as Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, pointed out, 26 Senate Democrats supported fencing proposals in 2006.
"How is what President Trump is asking for different from what Congress wanted in 2006?" Camerota asked. "Why do [Democrats] object now to a border wall when border fencing was considered by Democrats to be successful then?"
The distinction between now and then, Merkley attempted to explain, is that with fencing "you can see through it."
"In fact, the border guard itself says a concrete wall is an absolute mistake. They say the border guard needs to be able to see what's going on on the other side, that the wall doesn't stop any bad things from happening, it just makes it impossible for the folks on our side to see what's developing, and it makes it more difficult for them," Merkley claimed.
The Democratic lawmaker later vowed that Congress will not fund "a fourth-century strategy, easily defeated, that makes life more difficult." He said the result of a border wall is not security, despite Trump's claims.
"Why should we fund that? It makes no sense at all," Merkley asserted.
