North Korea’s nuclear test site has collapsed ... and that may be why Kim Jong-un suspended tests

The mountain’s collapse after a fifth blast last fall has led to the creation of a massive ‘chimney’ that could leak radioactive fallout into the air, researchers have found

North Korea’s mountain nuclear test site has collapsed, putting China and other nearby nations at unprecedented risk of radioactive exposure, two separate groups of Chinese scientists studying the issue have confirmed.

The collapse after five nuclear blasts may be why North Korean leader Kim Jong-un declared on Friday that he would freeze the hermit state’s nuclear and missile tests and shut down the site, one researcher said.

The last five of Pyongyang’s six nuclear tests have all been carried out under Mount Mantap at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in North Korea’s northwest.

One group of researchers found that the most recent blast tore open a hole in the mountain, which then collapsed upon itself. A second group concluded that the breakdown created a “chimney” that could allow radioactive fallout from the blast zone below to rise into the air.

A research team led by Wen Lianxing, a geologist with the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, concluded that the collapse occurred following the detonation last autumn of North Korea’s most powerful thermal nuclear warhead in a tunnel about 700 metres (2,296 feet) below the mountain’s peak.

The test turned the mountain into fragile fragments, the researchers found.

Nice work, Chicom. Ready for radioactive blowback through the "chimney?"

Rumor was that when it collapsed, 200 of the NK nuclear scientists were killed in one fell swoop..................They have nothing left......................

There must be countless incredibly tragic stories behind this situation. I wonder how many will be told over the next fifty years or so.

The boy king who thinks life is a video game has done incredible damage and created an unbelievable level of heartache and long-term damage to his own kingdom and subjects because he thought they were a video game too.

I saw a graphic that said the fallout would be more towards South Korea and Japan.

OH, now it makes sense. Kim stopped the testing because he was worried about releasing fallout through that “chimney”. I head he is quite an environmentalist and would be deeply concerned about contamination escaping.
Also, North Korea is almost a flat plain with no other mountains they could shift over to.

Lol..ANYTHING rather than give Trump a little credit. Laughable.

Some will use this as a reason not to give Trump any credit. But as you suggest, the truth is they could always use a different site. Trump and his Administration are using this as an opportunity to convince the Norks that continued testing will cause more problems for them -- including with the U.S. -- that it is worth.

Yes! Explains the collapse while 200 workers inside. We may never get confirmation during our lifetimes. Since HRC made many of our secrets available, we had to get a new start under the Trump Administration.

We have learned he informs to gain leverage and advantage. No need to provide North Korea and the world with the real answer, let them stay confused.

Yep a ceramic coated tungsten telephone pole launched from high orbit does a tiny bit of damage when it hits.

Depends on wind direction. Since it is close to Chinese border, shifting wind can easily carry radioactive materials into China. Traveling to S. Korea and Japan is a longer journey. More chance of them getting diluted.
