A tower of power! Country home that comes complete with its own 80ft tall Victorian column could be yours for £1.6million

  • The Devon property was built for Bishops of St Paul's Cathedral back in 1843
  • It includes the tower, nine acres of parkland and a seven-bedroom farmhouse

A country home that has a grand 80ft tall Victorian tower has gone on the market for £1.6 million.

Bishops Tower, found in the village of Offwell, Devon is named after its impressive Italianate six-storey stone tower, which has stunning far-reaching views across the rolling countryside.

It is said to have been built for Bishop Copleston, Bishop of Llandaff and Dean of St Paul's Cathedral, in 1843 to enable him to see his diocese.

The Grade II Listed property, near Honiton, includes the tower and a seven-bedroom farmhouse and nine acres of parkland.

It's believed the property was first built as a smallholding bought by a bullion company as somewhere to change horses while transporting precious metals from Falmouth to London.

Bishop Copleston was born in Offwell in 1776 and was responsible for building many of the village's significant homes and the primary school.

He had this water tower built from local stone rubble partly to provide local employment but also to provide a far-reaching view of Llandaff Cathedral across the Bristol Channel.

It was a country house hotel in the 20th century and was then bought by a local businesswoman who kept horses.

The current owners' De Bradshaw and Steven Upperdine bought the property 20 years for their family. They had to completely rebuild the house after a devastating fire in 2015.

Now they are looking to move on as their children have grown up and moved out.

The reception room and seventh bedroom could be used as a separate holiday annexe or live/work space.

The tower has four rooms over four floors, each 10ft square, and a viewing platform at the top. It can be illuminated at night by remote-controlled floodlights.
