Twitch is one of the best content creation platforms for viewers and aspiring streamers. But getting started with Twitch requires being acquainted with essential features such as promoting channel growth, suggesting channels, going live on Twitch, or how to maintain a community of subscribers. Fortunately, Twitch offers built-in tools to support your streaming endeavors, including easy ways to manage your channel. As your channel births a community of dedicated subscribers, keeping it safe and clean is going to be a number one priority. Of course, this is easier said than done, but it's all possible with the moderation tools Twitch provides that are entirely accessible through the app/website from your trusty Android phone. So let's dig in.

The role of moderators on Twitch

You can assign the moderator role to any user on Twitch, assuming they are a trusted community member. Moderators can ban or time-out users, manage polls and predictions, and control the traffic of your Twitch chat by enabling slow, subscriber-only, and follower-only chat modes. Of course, choosing who your moderators are is entirely up to you, where you can easily assign (and remove) the role through the Twitch app and website, which we'll walk you through step by step to get you started.

How to make someone a mod on the Twitch website

Note: Please ensure you are logged into your Twitch account before continuing, and you must be live (streaming) on Twitch.

  1. Go live on Twitch, then navigate to your channel to view the streaming chat box.
  2. In the streaming chat box, enter the command /mod username and replace the username with the prospective mod's Twitch username.

  3. A sword icon next to the Twitch username identifies they are now one of your moderators. Check that the moderator status has been correctly applied.
  4. To remove (demote) the moderator role from a Twitch username, enter the command /unmod username (replace username with the user's name).

How to make someone a moderator from the chat

Alternatively, you can choose a user to become a moderator while they are in your Twitch chat. Here's how.

  1. Open your stream chat, and click on the user's Twitch username.
  2. On the displayed profile overview, click on the silhouette icon. Note: Clicking on the icon (again) will also remove the moderator status.

How to add Twitch moderators through the Creator Dashboard

Sometimes it's inconvenient to add moderators while you're busy with streaming, so you may opt to add moderators offline instead.

  1. Click on your profile icon, then select Creator Dashboard.
  2. From the Creator Dashboard menu, tap Community > Roles Manager.
  3. Click Add a Role.
  4. Enter and select the Twitch user using the search box.
  5. Click the box next to Moderator.
  6. Select Save.

How to make someone a mod using the Twitch app

  2. Access the streaming chat after you've gone live while on the app.

Note: Follow the same steps when removing the moderator role.

Twitch is more than just a streaming platform

Since Twitch is more akin to a virtual social network, moderation plays a key role in ensuring that the chat experience is safe. While the platform has several automated tools to prevent those few bad apples from spoiling the environment and sabotaging your following, it's always vital to have a few entrusted human moderators on board. And if you're new to the platform, Twitch has plenty of nifty features that make it a robust streaming and social platform for gaming.
