Honestly, yes it stinks but it really isn't the worst thing at all. In fact there are a ton of positives.

1. Give the team a chance to rest. 5 LONG post seasons runs is like playing another whole season or more of high stress games. Everyone can recover from injuries and take a season of less minutes and less wear and tear on guys like Curry, Draymond, Iggy, etc.

2. Give them a chance to develop their younger players and find out what they have.

3. Get a better draft pick since they have only had later picks due to being so good lately.

4. KD and Klay may sign on longer to see if they can come back to win 1 more in 2021.

5. They are going to bring in tons of fans anyway b/c they still have Curry and they are opening a new stadium that everyone wants to visit.

Your exactly right. Injured contenders are a perfect opportunity to get lottery picks. Spurs dynasty is built off of that from 20 years ago. I have a feeling though they are going to try and make the playoffs then bring Klay and KD(if around) back for the later rounds. Us calling 2020 a wash is probably perceived as a dare in their locker room tbh and they probably going to try to prove everyone wrong cause if they even get close the media is going to be nuthugging the shit outta them.

Then again I know that sounds ridicolous given how guilty they should be feeling but by playoffs 2020, Klay should in theory be back and KD should in theory be getting close to being able to comeback(he's prolly gone hypothetically). Time heals feelings as well, as do large af contracts. If they keep Boogie with the KD space, they still have a good chance cause they'll still get a high seed and then get Klay as a stimulus package. Seeing how likely KD is to not return this is likely their best bet. Boogie's also not a supermax player so he'll be cheaper freeing up some money in a pretty tight situation where that's important. Again I agree think this is a good oppurtunity to get a lottery player and these constant deep playoff runs every single year without a deep bench just aren't sustainable. If I were GM would toss the year to the side and roll out the good ole tanks, go for 2021. Three rings give you the job security to do that. But I see it likely they say fuck that and go for it anyway. And yeah this is the first year of their new stadium, if they were open to a gap year, I think this is not one they want, they want to christen the new stadium with a great year.

Got to clarify I'M NOT SAYING BOOGIE IS ON THE SAME LEVEL AS KD cause every time I say they should keep Boogie to replace KD, people misunderstand it. Me saying that is based on the assumptions KD wants to leave and not going to play next year. It is not me saying "oh fuck KD, let's replace him with this injury prone center, that's a wonderful idea". You ain't getting another replacement star, anyone trying to save the Warriors is going to get mindfucked the same way KD did. Boogie's the best they will do.

Great post!! And I totally forgot to put "More likely to retain Boogie now" on my list. I think he'll stay. I know he's injury prone and seems to be a shell of his former self, but he's still a big body who can pass well and shoot pretty decent.

I think you might be right about KD and Klay too. MAybe they'll see how the season plays out. If they squeak in with a 7 or 8 seed do you really want to rush those guys back against a 1 or 2 seed who's been dominant all year? It will at least make the regular season interesting now :)

Tim Duncan scenario 2.0

An injured contender having one of the worst records is the loophole to beating the draft, in the name of fighting tanking that loophole just got bigger. You can say changing the rules hurts tankers but it also helps bad teams that aren't terrible, which is what Golden State taking the L would prolly be. This rule change is going to probably backfire(not necessarily for Golden State but for someone) and end up getting some contenders high draft picks they'd have needed to embarrass themselves to get in the past.

Tanking to get a particular top player is dead, tanking to get a good player in a good draft class ain't. Lolz at Knicks fans getting a player who'd go number one other years and acting like their dog died.

You don't just draft like the spurs did tho

You don't but the Duncan first round pick was the foundation that made the whole thing possible. And that come from a year of not competing(call it tanking if you'd like, maybe it was maybe it wasn't). Everyone else weren't lottery picks.

Golden State's first round picks that made this dynasty ain't nothing to sneeze at either, what made San Antonio's picks so exceptional is they came in second round when it's much harder to see success coming(traded for Kawhi). A lot of teams still fuck up lottery picks and all(sorry MJ) but it's easier than getting all stars out of the second round. But you aren't going to get transformational players that late usually.

Screwing owning a scope that requires batteries to use.

And loz this conversation is now irrelevant, the Warriors are going to try and give the NBA community the big middle finger by plugging in Russell for Klay and gunning for another title. Are they being delusional? Probably but if you'd won the West 5 straight times you'd think you'd be delusional as well.
