Yesterday at open mat I rolled with a 4 stripe blue belt at open mat. I didn't know him apparently from another gym. I got a couple submissions on him, but then when I got a basic straight ankle lock he has to pause and be like woah sorry, but I don't really train leg locks. I'm like umm do you not want me to do S mount either because apparently you can't do shit about that either...

I'm not someone who only likes leg locks. I'm mostly about getting to mount and finishing, but if you're dangling it out there ill take it. But what is it about leg locks? They are the only submissions where people bitch about them if you do them

It's insane that there are gyms out there that still don't roll with leg locks.

depends of the teachings:
- some schools forbid any leg lock techniques
- other allow the straight footlock since the white belts and the kneebar toe holds from the brown belt
in my case, we do footlocks at white belt, straight kneebar from blue, I don't practice so much the leg locks as I focus to improve the guard passings so the top game but I learnt how to escape from footlock kneebar toe holds... the survival minimal

Or maybe after their 2nd ACL reconstruction they are just very concerned about having a 3rd.

Good thing a straight ankle lock has nothing to do with your knee
Sometimes people who are ignorant about leglocks find a way to blow their own knee out even when you’d think that would be really challenging.

Usually by gator rolling like a spaz when their ankle and knee are locked down tight.

People bitch because they were never properly taught them, were taught disdain for them, were taught that they don’t work anyway so it doesn’t count if someone catches you in one (think about that too hard and your head will explode), or because they’re deeply insecure about the gaping hole in their skill set.

I have a way to apply heel hook style pressure on the knee with a ankle lock looking grip with the heel slipping and hooking it with the chest)

Good thing that people who go for legs always know what they are doing, will never reap, or just start torquing and twisting like there is no tomorrow.

No.

That never happens.

You don’t roll with kimuras, right?

They’re far more dangerous than straight ankle locks. Rotator cuff injuries are comparable with knee injuries in terms of severity.

Spazzes are spazzes.

I don't mind them, but my gym's policy is very anti-leglock as they strongly emphasize IBJJF rules. They do teach straight ankle locks to white belts, though.

The only bad experience I had was a higher belt coming in from a different gym and trying to kneebar me (white belt). Otherwise, I just wish my gym taught more leg attacks. Even at upper belts, it isn't emphasized.

i've noticed a lot of people, perhaps your blue belt also, just simply have ZERO idea what a footlock is or does. even the most basic knowledge you and i have (like "ankle locks attack the ankle") is a mystery. most of these people tap before you even apply it and then shrug, while a special few will actually try to attack one back on you even though they have no idea what they're doing.

I'm a purple belt and yeah it's annoying as fuck when people just tap before you even lock in the sub. I'm like at least fucking try I'm not gonna hurt you and you may actually learn something.

"woah sorry, but I don't really train leg locks" doesn't really seem like bitching.

Ive said things like that because I haven't really trained them and i don't know what i don't want to do to when defending.

Its a hole in my game, i know it. That said if anyone can point out a good instructional on leg lock defense and safety id love it.

I doubt I would be as cautious if the ruling bodies weren't but they are so i am too

There aren’t any videos on just “armlock defense and safety”, because the best way to learn the defense is to learn the offense and what the control points are. Leg locks are similar.

Straight ankle locks are allowed at ibjjf white belt

But that is taught by every bjj instructor, leg locks aren't.

This is true, but to the point of the TS it is hard to understand why people are so willing to dismiss attacks and defense to half of their body. Instructors are very worried about injuries, but many fail to show enough defense to avoid being in the positions in the first place .

It's old school thinking that it's cheap and dirty (like wrist locks) in many cases. It's foolish to ignore half of the body in a fight. The blue belt you rolled with may have had his reasons as outlined in other posts. Personally I'm 45 and just don't want to be heel hooked so I ask my training partners not to crank is they get it on me.

The IBJJF, for all of its faults, sets a decent set of rules for leg attacks by belt level.

He should've armed himself.

Or to train to defend whenever his legs get caught or tangled simple of that, the only thing I don't like is when a brown belt do it on a novice white belt and injures him
