Undeniably, Sean has the most colorful hairstyle in the UFC.

The UFC is really locking him in. Once upon a time Sean said he wouldn't fight higher tier opponents unless he were getting paid appropriately. Guess he is now. Note: Sean is his own manager.
Sean O’Malley signs 8-fight contract extension with the UFC
Sean's remarks about it.
“I got a very gracious contract that I’m proud of,” O’Malley said. “I got a number that I’m very happy with. I truly don’t think any manager that I had could have went in there and got me what I got. That also helps with the relationship built with the UFC. I feel like I have earned this contract. I feel like I have earned the amount that I’m getting paid.”

What MMA Fighting says about him.

"O’Malley has quickly become one of the UFC’s most marketable stars while steadily rising up the ranks at 135 pounds with an 8-1 record with one no-contest through 10 fights with the organization. He’s currently riding a five-fight unbeaten streak with his only loss in the UFC coming via TKO to Marlon “Chito” Vera back in 2020. All signs currently point towards O’Malley receiving a title shot in his next fight, although that all depends on when reigning UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling returns to action."

When I see O'Malley, I'm reminded of and genuintely impressed by the ability of UFC to make a star out of nothing.

O'Malley is not a good MMA fighter. Before people get mad and start quoting me, in 2020, I said,

I think Sean is a better striker than Yan. Just my opinion.

which LOTS of people disagreed with. So I probably saw what O'Malley could do long before casual fans took note of him, so it's not like I'm hating on the guy which I'm sure many may say that I am.

And also about his Yan fight, I previously said,

It's a great fight for Sean. I don't think much of Sean O'Malley, but he can beat Petr in a three rounder.

He will lose to someone like Simon, Shore, Umar, Merab, but oh boy is UFC doing a top notch job trying to grow O'Malley with just the right match ups.

Personally, I think Yan should wrestle in this one. Because I think Yan can wrestle O'Malley down. I'm sure Yan can beat Sean standing up, but in a three rounder, I favor Sean, as crazy as it may sound.

Yan's a better fighter than Sugar, and not close, but match ups make fights.

Since people would bring up Yan fight to talk about how great Sean is, which is laughable at best. It was the best win-win fight for O'Malley, though many didn't see it that way.

In my opinion, O'Malley is an excellent product of UFC hype machine, nothing more or less. He's ranked 2 or 1 right now, but well outside top 20 in my opinion in terms of talent.

Probably the worst highest ranked fighter in UFC right now, if not all time.

He'll get PPV points.

And he can renegotiate half way through the contract
Wouldnt he just get a better contract if he just waited one fight? Cause his next fight is for the belt and he has a big chance to win it imo.

Im no expert but I just think in my head he would have got a better deal if he waited a fight.

"Not a good MMA fighter" good lord

it seems like some people think of everyone as a bum except if they become UFC champion.

There's literally thousands of MMA competitors all around the world but of course the #2 ranked guy who just beat an ex-champion in the premier MMA promotion worldwide is "not good"

8 fight contract... Thats a slave contract. What happens if he wins the title in his next fight and becomes a star?

UFC lets top names renegotiate even if deal not up. So Sean could still have 4 fights left and get a new deal again later on. They only let top guys and people they like do this tho.

And he can renegotiate half way through the contract

He'd still have 4 fights left on this current contract

What leverage could he possibly have? "renegotiating" here is no more than asking Dana for a financial favor.

But if he sucks its an 8 fight contract, and I don't think UFC would cut him even if he goes 1-4 as he's enough of a name PFL or ONE could make some money off him. So this is the low risk low reward play by O'malley. Nothing wrong with that

He's not the best but saying he isn't good is a massive stretch. You don't get a 16-1 record and go 8-1 in the UFC if you aren't good. Even if he hasn't fought the best guys outside of the Yan fight he's still good.

Aside from that I agree with you, he is almost entirely a product of the UFC as far as his hype goes. He's nowhere near as popular as Conor or even paddy but for a guy with no charisma to be as popular as he is, it's fairly impressive. Makes me think maybe they could have done something with DJ even. Maybe dj just needed to grow his hair and dye it funny colors idk.

Nobody cares.

Totally agree. I think it’s very cerebral of O’Malley. It shows he knows he didn’t get to where he is off of pure talent, so he’s willing to lock in with the guys that put him in a good position in case he falls short in the future. It’s a safe play and not a bad bet.

He’s a good fighter, but a far better personality

This is recognizing that. Very good chance his ceiling is get a title shot to lose but bring in high views for that. Like a Masvidal. Solid move.

But he did, so I guess it IS possible. What can I say?

Conor was different. I do think O'Malley is more talented than Paddy though, but also to be fair to Paddy, UFC never gave O'malley a stylistical tough match up like Gordon during his entire rise up to the top, or near it.

Dana won't ever make him fight a grappler in those 8 fights.

Sean on the verge of getting that privilege. He just has to learn how to suck Danas dingdong like Paddy does.

Then you have a Francis situation

How many times have seen fighters refuse to fight mid contract until their deal is renegotiated? Masvidal, Dustin, Jon Jones, Adesanya... etc

And what always happens after they speak out? They get paid more. It's actually pretty common for fighters to do this
