Shakur Stevenson Needs To Use Angles More | Terrible Tim Witherspoon

Hey champ. I agree with your analysis. Conventionally speaking Shakur should be looking to secure what analysts refer to as “lead foot dominance” in order to take the outside angle. Doing so will allow him to get off the center line while simultaneously enabling him to line up his straight left hand. You'd think that Shakur, being a southpaw with plenty of amateur experience, would already know to do this. It's something that should've been drilled into him by now when fighting orthodox opponents. I find it odd that his angling and overall positional awareness is nonexistent. I noticed that Anthony Joshua is in the same boat when a southpaw is standing across from him. Neither Shakur nor Joshua understand what they should be doing in a so-called “open stance” match. It's head-scratching, really.

Maybe to the untrained eye. It's not difficult to look good against a fighter as limited as Valdez. As Floyd would say he's just a come forward fighter—“straight up and down, no special effects.” If Shakur allows a guy like Lomachenko to constantly take angles on him, while giving him none of his own, it's really going to bite him in the ass (Shakur being a fellow southpaw will neutralize a lot of Lomachenko's angling but that's not the point). The conventional wisdom is to always seek to advance position in a fight. This will limit your opponent's options while maximizing your own.

Good to see you back on Sherdog. Thanks for the breakdown. I see from the video, what you were saying about them being faced straight at each other, instead of offset. We see this a lot in MMA, because of the takedown threat, so the style is altered. It seems like your suggestion would make the boxers move more, as each would react to each other's movements to offset. I would be interested in your thoughts on how a boxer would gain primacy in this battle, but I guess it would just come down to reflexes and speed. Also, it would be interesting to hear your take on the upcoming Anderson Silva vs. Jake Paul boxing match. Thanks or hanging out with us on Sherdog again.

Don't be stupid and rude, please.

Lol, "perfectly". You've never boxed, have you?

Every time he lands a good punch (usually a cross to the body), he stops punching, smiles like an idiot and nods his head up and down for 30 seconds instead of following up with more punches. It's absolutely retarded.

Here's an example. Tim would like to see Shakur do this consistently. Except with Shakur actually moving off the line by slipping/dipping to the outside when punching from that angle. Shakur is halfway there in the sequence below. He just needs to do a lot more of this in future fights against orthodox opponents.
