Fuckin' weirdo. Put him in an asylum. I remember reading "The Things They Carried" and having a bit of an aha moment in terms of how humans cope with traumatic situations, but there are limits to my empathy.

Australian, and by extension Western, troops are supposed to be the "good guys" in the scenario. Gathering trophies is something serial killers do. You want to win hearts and minds or whatever, maybe try not looking like psychopatic bloodthirsty barbarians?

there is this great book I read on war.

it's called, "War is a Force that gives us meaning..."

essentially, the crux of the message was this...

when we remove the ultimate Taboo of society (killing people), barbaric acts like this will follow and should be unsurprising.

it's no shocker that rape, torture, and other acts of inhumanity follow.
 
We train young people to blow some other young person's brains out. We send them off to war where they get to see their closest friends killed. Those who have a heart and conscience can slowly turn cold as they witness horror first hand.

Should we act shocked that these same young people do things like that which is posted in the OP? It's crass, it's wrong, and it's not of good character. But, I'm not surprised that someone would do it. If they broke law then continue investigating and punish them.

I got to hang out with and drink with Aussie Commandos in '98. Awesome group of guys with an impressive ability to drink.
