Stoke make move for Huddersfield winger Tom Ince after cooling interest in Newcastle midfielder Matt Ritchie

  • Stoke City have held talks with Huddersfield Town over the transfer of Tom Ince
  • The Potters have grown frustrated in their protracted pursuit of Matt Ritchie
  • Gary Rowett is also looking to sign a holding midfielder and a centre back

Stoke City have held further discussions over a potential move for Huddersfield Town's Tom Ince as they grow frustrated in their pursuit of Newcastle's Matt Ritchie.

The Potters have been long linked with a move for the Scotland international as they prepare to bounce back from Premier League relegation, but internal politics at Newcastle are holding up any deal, which has seen Gary Rowett seek an alternative.

Ince made 33 Premier League appearances last season for the Terriers, but scored just twice from 70 efforts on goal.

Rafa Benitez would prefer to keep Ritchie at St James' Park and will only sanction a move should a replacement be in place. However, a clear rift over United's transfer policy this summer means the Spaniard does not trust the club to bring in the right cover.

Stoke anticipate signing James McClean from West Brom for £6million but want two wingers, a holding midfielder and centre back.

Leicester's Daniel Amartey and James Chester of Aston Villa are among their options for the latter role.

Villa rejected a bid of £5m for the Wales international last week and are asking for double that price.

However, negotiations are centering around a compromise, with Stoke prepared to meet in the middle around the £8m mark.
