Manchester United should sign Cristiano Ronaldo's former Juventus team-mate Paulo Dybala this summer to play alongside the wantaway superstar, insists Darren Ambrose.

It emerged last week that Ronaldo wished to depart the club this summer after feeling that it could not match his ambition of playing out the final years of his career at the top of the game.

Free agent Dybala is still on the search for a new club after departing Juventus on a free transfer at the end of last month. It had been believed that Inter Milan were his likeliest destination, but Romelu Lukaku's return means that interest has cooled.

Speaking on talkSPORT amid the news that Ronaldo wants to leave, former Crystal Palace, Newcastle and Charlton midfielder Ambrose said that if the Portuguese were to remain then Dybala would prove the perfect foil for him in a front two.

He said: 'I think they should [sign Dybala] if Ronaldo stays. I don't feel he's a suitable replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.'

'He's a fantastic player but he hasn't got the numbers that Ronaldo gets, he doesn't score as many goals. Whether he can do that in a Manchester United side remains to be seen,' he added.

'But the best thing that can happen to Manchester United with Ronaldo is to put a partner next to him that works hard, and Dybala will do the press, he will do the squeeze, he's a fantastic player. Keep them both.'

He added: 'Sign Dybala and keep Ronaldo, play them together, see how that works out. He wouldn't be a replacement if Ronaldo left.'

Meanwhile, it emerged on Tuesday morning that Ronaldo was set to miss pre-season training for the second consecutive day after citing family reasons.

The Portuguese had been set to return this week along with the second tranche of Manchester United players, mostly including internationals who took part in June's Nations League games.

However, Ronaldo was not at training on Monday and is set to miss what would have been his second day with new manager Erik ten Hag.
