Derby 1-1 Coventry: Gustavo Hamer's last-minute equaliser denies Wayne Rooney his first win as boss and keeps Rams rooted to bottom of Championship

  • Wayne Rooney's Derby side were held to a 1-1 draw against Coventry
  • Colin Kazim-Richards scored for Derby in the 83rd minute of the game
  • But, Gustavo Hamer responded with a right footed shot in the 90-+1 minute

Wayne Rooney has called on Derby to decide who will be their next permanent boss after his second game in charge ended in a draw with Coventry.

The former England captain looked to have claimed his first victory as a manager when Colin Kazim-Richards put them in front in the 83rd minute, but Coventry midfielder Gustavo Hamer equalised in stoppage time to leave Derby rooted to the bottom, five points adrift of safety. Seconds earlier, Derby substitute Jack Stretton had hit the bar from six yards.

Rooney remains in the dark about his future with the proposed £60million takeover by Sheik Khaled bin Zayed Al Nehayan still not complete.

Rooney said: ‘The quicker that is done the better as a decision needs to be made. I am confident in this role and of course I would love to do the job. We have to plan. We’ve put plans in place so at least the players have the stability of knowing the plans for the next few weeks.

‘I feel I am ready to be a manager long-term. But the important thing now is the players and my sole focus is getting them ready for Saturday at Millwall. I’m in contact [with the prospective new owners] and it is very close.’

Though Callum O’Hare missed two outstanding chances for Coventry, Derby created enough to win the game, and believed they should have had a penalty when Tom Lawrence was felled by Dominic Hyam just before the hour.

Rooney’s celebrations were muted when Kazim-Richards produced a superb leap at the far post to head in Nathan Byrne’s cross. Kazim-Richards then did brilliantly to set up Stretton, who somehow hit the woodwork from an ideal position. Rooney’s men were punished when Leo Ostigard’s cross was poorly cleared and Hamer – unmarked on the edge of the box – volleyed through the crowd and past David Marshall.

Coventry boss Mark Robins added: ‘We didn’t play particularly well but the never-say-die attitude is there. Considering everything we have to deal with in the pandemic our levels are outstanding.’
