Southampton's former captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg reportedly has his sights set on a move to Tottenham this season.

The Dane was stripped of the captaincy at St Mary's in June after failing to agree a contract extension with 12 months remaining on his deal.

After telling Saints of his desire to join a bigger club the armband was handed to James Ward-Prowse, and Hojbjerg has featured only three times during Project Restart.

Tottenham are believed to be leading the chase, and according to the Evening Standard it is a move to north London the 24-year-old is after.

They claim that Spurs are confident of forcing down the £35million asking price that Southampton have placed on the midfielder.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is keen on acquiring a holding midfielder, with Eric Dier expected to shift into defence.

He sees Hojbjerg as a realistic upgrade as he prepares for his second season at the club.

Mourinho could look to use Kyle Walker-Peters, who is currently on loan on the south coast, as a makeweight in the deal.

The youngster has been a regular for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side since the restart, which has included victory over Manchester City and a draw at Manchester United on Monday night.

Mourinho last week said 'there is a place' for the 23-year-old at Spurs but, will not stand in his way if he wishes to seek pastures new.
