Demi Lovato Called The Song She Recorded Four Days Before Her Overdose "A Cry For Help"

"How did nobody listen to this song and think, 'Let's help this girl.'"

On July 24, 2018, Demi Lovato was hospitalized in Los Angeles for an apparent drug overdose.

Now, a year and a half later, Demi is making a comeback, performing a new song at the Grammys this weekend.

In a new interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Demi opened up about the emotional journey of the song she's performing, which was first recorded mere days before her overdose.

"I just want to go up there and tell my story and I have three minutes to do so, so I'm just gonna do the best that I can," the 27-year-old said about her upcoming Grammys performance.

She revealed, "The song that I'm gonna be performing is called 'Anyone,'" before Zane asked her about the "timeline" of the song.

"So this song was written and recorded actually very shortly before...everything happened. So I recorded the vocals for it four days before —," she said, before Zane finished the sentence for her: "July 20th."

"So the lyrics took on a totally different meaning. At the time when I was recording it — I almost listen back and hear these lyrics as a cry for help, and you kinda listen back to it and think 'How did nobody listen to this song and think, Let's help this girl, you know what I'm saying?"

"And I even think that I was recording it in a state of mind where I felt like I was okay, but clearly I wasn't," she went on. "And I even listen back to it and think like, Gosh, I wish I could go back in time and help that version of myself."

The "Sorry Not Sorry" singer continued, opening up about her hospitalization and the song's "heavy and emotional" lyrics:

I feel like I was in denial [when singing "Anyone"], but then a part of me definitely knew what I was singing for...I was singing this song and I didn't even realize the lyrics were so heavy and emotional until after the fact, and that's what kind of brings us to this moment. You know I remember being in the hospital and listening to this song — it was about a week after I had been in the hospital and I was finally awake — and I just remember hearing back the songs I had just recorded and thinking, If there's ever a moment where I get to come back from this, I want to sing this song.

Well, I can't wait to hear it, Demi.
