The reason why so many Brits die of the cold is that they insist on pretending to have a "mild, bracing climate" when in fact it gets Cold as the Hubs of Hell in the North.

A Gordie is a Brit who shovels snow in a wife-better, shorts and sandles, and then dies of a heart-attack within three days.

In Canada we called these tough guys "Frenchies", but that was wrong and bilingualism made us stop.

If you see a short man who looks like a Gorilla shovelling snow with one hand, while wearing a wifebeater, and he eats a banana held in the other hand, you have just seen a living stereotype. They are not exactly rare, but they are regional and worth a small side trip.

Well, I consider myself a libertarian-conservative than anything else.  But, you do you....

Also, if everything you see or read makes you think of Trump, consider getting professional help.  It's not healthy....

Bob is driving when he sees a hiker on the side of the road.

The man looks tired and perhaps needs some help, so Bob pulls over and lets him in.

After driving for a few minutes and some small talk, the hiker asks, "Hey, aren't you worried that I might be a serial killer?"

Bob chuckles lightly and replies, "The odds of two serial killers being in the same car are very slim."

What does pit toilet mean to you? I think of a self-dug hole in the ground. Some think an outhouse, or maybe an Asian system. This guy sheltered in one.

That term puzzles me a bit too.  Lake parks in my state often have enclosed sit-down toilets which are situated over a pit which I guess are pumped out occasionally (hadn't really thought about that part until now).  Outhouse style, but slightly fancier.

So I guess hunkering down inside one would be shelter from the wind, rain and snow but still not particularly warm or pleasant.

I did the PCT in 2012 and faced similar weather on the last couple of days. A few days of soaking rain that turned into a snowstorm. 2000 miles of hiking hardens you a fair bit, but extended exposure to freezing rain penetrates the best gear and can turn the hardest man hypothermic. Good thing he was able to keep his wits in those conditions; reasoning skills disappear pretty quickly when hypothermic.

All that said, he should be much farther up the trail at this point of the year. It isn't getting any nicer, and there is plenty of  high altitude trail in Washington.

Yeah.. I've never done the whole PCT, but have lived in those areas. October seems real late in the year for this sort of thing.

Given his location that's likely the case. At best, it's pumped, or it may be a compositing toilet due to rurality.

So a hole with a basic wooden box around it, basically. A shelter from weather, but not necessarily temperature.
