Well yeah I guess.  They kill great white sharks when in the mood.  But they are cuter so there is that.

Vancouver is a beautiful city. Loads of great bars all along false creek, too. It would have been totally badass to be sitting on a patio, with a beer, and getting to see shamu and friends swim by.

About 35 years ago, a humpback whale swam under the Golden Gate Bridge and kept swimming up the Sacramento River until he got to Rio Vista. Screwed around in the delta for almost a month before turning around and heading back to the ocean. Not many bars along the way, but a farkload of people went out to see the spectacle. We expect the salmon to swim upriver, not whales. The town of Rio Vista put up a plague to commemorate the visit.

For some reason I get the vibe that you're in the Puget Sound area. True?

Also, had a great experience many moons ago at Camp Orkila on Orcas Island. A squall rushed down the inside passage when we were camped on Patos. Ripped the place apart. It was fantastic!

The next day a supply boat came out to provide some dry sleeping bags. A few of us happy campers got to go out into the strait where a pod was sheltering. We got pretty dang close. Illegally close by today's laws. One of the whales surfaced very near and went right under so closely that I thought the fin barely scraped. It was huge, especially to a ten year old in a sixteen foot Boston Whaler. This was in the 70's.

The orca are a huge part of the identity around here. Beautiful creatures. Hope the Southern Residents can keep their numbers up. The mother that carried her dead calf last year was a tragic thing to witness.

I've spent some time in the San Juan islands studying the K pod. That and a whale biology degree will get a cup of coffee at The Bean in Friday Harbor

TorpedoOrca:

My favorite place in FH is the Cask & Schooner. Locally raised lamb burgers and a most excellent bread pudding. Cheers.
