That's a big trailer or two to take that many head of cattle.

Keep in mind, 56 head could easily be worth well over $100,000. Not some quaint heist.

Subby doesn't understand that people still ride horses or where steak comes from.

Just because it's not in your world doesn't mean it doesn't exist.  Cattle are common everywhere from Texas to California to (yes, even New York).  And, cattle rustling is big business - millions of dollars.

With the exception of "rustling" via embezzlement and fraud, how else do ya think they do it?  On foot?  In their Chevy Volts?  With a stealth train?

/yeah, I know, trucks with trailers are most common, but hard to grab 56 head of cattle off a ranch that way.  Easier just to herd them, especially if you a "lone" suspect.

One thing that has changed here in Western South Dakota over the years is cowboy hats and horses disappearing. It's feed caps and ATVs now. I rarely see a rancher on horseback now. Maybe that's just around here.

Yeah, but given the existence of modern tracking devices, it's hard to imagine someone not getting caught. Thus, it still seems like an oddly old-fashioned crime.
