Saw this on the local news last night. I wasn't totally impressed, i was expecting missing limbs and digits and really gory stuff. No, just a flesh wound.

/Reason number 2 why I don't swim in the ocean by the way. (getting bitten by ocean wild-life, including jelly-fish stings, etc)

When this crap first aired in 78, i think it was around that time I had "grown up" from Saturday morning cartoons (except for Superfriends) and stopped watching them. It was this one and other one that put the nail in the coffin for me and turned me off on what used to be a fun Saturday AM cartoon fest.

There's never been a confirmed human kill by hammerheads. They're mostly bottom feeders.

I'm sitting here in Volusia County, FL (so called shark bite capital of the world??) looking at this non story in awe. They closed the beach for that? It was a nip, not a bite. There is a difference. The picture of the bite on the young girls leg looks like the damage from a black tip.

Oh yeah?  You don't know what shark bites are really like. I live in an undersea cave surrounded by sharks.  I can't go out to get my mail without a gang of sharks tearing out my intestines and weaving them into hats and purses.

(I mean come on, man.  The first shark attack in that area in 70 years isn't even worth a blurb because you personally happen to live near warmer waters?  How does that even make sense?)

Jeez!  Why are you so racist?  Why can't a hammerhead shark just drop in the thread and say hi and look around a little bit?  He isn't killing any humans, he is just reading.  FFS

Every February I spend a weekend in Stinson Beach Ca, a tiny little beach town north of SF.
Every year I go for a swim, get about waist deep and then realize that I'm swimming in one of the most popular spots anywhere for great whites.
Then I go back to shore and drink.

I love sharks, probably my favorite critter. I'd love to go cage diving, or even shark encounter diving with some of the more passive species. But swimming in waters known to have had great while attacks... ehhh... I think I'll admire them from land.

So anyway, we delivered the bomb.

What happens if sharks jump over other sharks? Does that mean they've jumped the shark?

New Yorker transplanted to Florida. Life guard, SCUBA, sailor - all check. She got a scratch on her leg. That does not justify shutting the beach down IMHO.

says yet another clueless person. I have stood in the surf waist deep just like this young miss and spotted a black fin within a foot or two of my leg. It is 'their yard' so I got off it, gave it its space. Returned to the water within 20 minutes. I have also dove in the Caribbean many times and was fortunate enough to see sharks up close and personal. Again, it is their yard. Just sit back and watch them. They are just as curious of us as we are of them. I said that by the look of her nip, it is probably a black tip. Mistaken identity on the part of the shark.

Nothing to worry about. Sharks will choke early and then migrate to the golf course for the rest of the summer.

They can also give you a pretty decent scrape without biting you at all. Sometimes they are a little territorial, probably because you're farking up their lunch run. White sharks do this with kayaks, which evidently freak out prey species by cruising along silhouetted against the surface.

You are a crazy and dangerous man.  I've seen the movies, I read the news, and  I'll bet if I followed your advice, I would almost be certainly in line to be speared in the chest by a stingray or swallowed whole by a swordfish.

The fact that for a time I was was very reluctant to even take baths after viewing Jaws as a child should be considered completely irrelevant to this discussion.
