Arid, yes, but at altitude.  The area is primarily chaparral forest, which is basically designed to burn, and perhaps some other stuff like pine(more at higher altitudes).  It's not open flat pans with nothing growing

Some friends have a 40 acre property near Valyermo and we saved the house and other outbuildings from burning down.   The wind picked up two nights ago and the fire just tore across the eastern side of the San Gabriels.   The desert will burn if the winds carry the embers from one plant to the next.  3/4s of the vegetation was decimated - the sage brush and rabbit brush burns completely, nothing left.  just open ground. Juniper trees are extremely flammable once you get past the bark - they tend to suddenly burst into flames after smoldering at the base for a while.   Joshua trees don't fare well in flames and they typically die if scorched on the outside.  The property had some beautiful joshua forests and all manner of ground vegitation and cacti, beautiful spring blooms.  It will take a long time to recover, especially the Joshuas.

I'll leave a trail of fire across this desert just to see the desperation in your eyes.

House burn regardless of where they are. "It ain't that there IS a fire, it's what's on fire".

A spin on the Ron White wind story.

Serious missed opportunity here - we could've prevented fire and improved our country's inner peace.

Not so bad. As long as there is whiskey in the world.

Well I mean they had it coming didn't they? Leaving all those needles and dead cacti that just dry out and explode?

From the area. The creosote bushes on the valley floor are spaced out and poor fuel that won't spread fire easily. But if it comes down the hwy 14 coridor and starts burning the Palmdale suburbs with high winds (very common in the area) it could turn into a major catastrophe. The Palmdale/ Lancaster metro area has hundreds of thousands people living there.

Good on you-- the bobcat fire has been described as pretty ferocious. We just had our evacuation warning lifted and feel very lucky but it is so hard to think about the northern perimeter foothill communities.

Out where the river broke
The bloodwood and the desert oak
Holden wrecks and boiling diesels
Steam in forty-five degrees

The time has come to say fair's fair
To pay the rent, to pay our share
The time has come, a fact's a fact
It belongs to them, let's give it back

How can we dance when our earth is turning?
How do we sleep while our desert's burning?

Los Angeles County park officials said the blaze destroyed the nature center at Devil's Punchbowl Natural Area, a geological wonder that attracts some 130,000 visitors per year.

That's a shame.  There wasn't much to the nature center, but the Devil's Punchbowl was a great place to hike.

Fark. This is so sad. I lived through the Thomas Fire in Ventura and it was devastating.
Those Joshua trees are so unique.  Whether camping in Joshua National Forest or driving to Vegas, I always loved seeing them.

Valyermo is a little slice of heaven. We often drive up through that area in the convertible. We always stop for a moment in the shade in front of the little post office with the pond, the ducks, and sometimes a horse. And the Abby nearby where there is no hunting except for peace. The whole area is full of fascinating places that most people don't realize (shout out to Charlie Brown's Farm) and good people. My heart breaks. Good luck to your friends!
