Introducing The Zenith Defy Zero G

The patented "Gravity Control" module comes to the brand's latest collection.

Quick Take

The Defy collection is quickly becoming the flagship offering from Zenith. Last year we got the first high-speed chronographs as well as the experimental Defy Lab, with its totally new regulator. The brand is now expanding the range at both the low end and the high end. The Defy Classic takes care of the former, while the Defy Zero G takes care of the latter.

The Zero G pairs the high-beat El Primero movement with a patented mechanism known as the Gravity Control, which acts as a gyroscopic mount for the regulator, ensuring that it is always horizontal. In theory, this means the balance should run at a neutral rate, unaltered by the effects of gravity. It's an idea inspired by the mounts used for early marine chronometers. The Gravity Control in this new 44mm Defy is smaller than any previous execution, and not by a little bit – it's now only 30% as large as in earlier watches.

Initial Thoughts

When you first think of Zenith, you almost certainly think of chronographs first and foremost. And, sure, the El Primero chronograph is a true legend and something to be respected, but Zenith does a lot more than just pump out El Primero chronos. This watch is a good reminder that there is a lot going on at the manufacture today, both in terms of mechanical innovation and styling.

The Defy Zero G is a bold watch to say the least (especially in solid rose gold on a matching rose gold bracelet), so it's probably one that many of you will admire from afar. However, I highly recommend you gets your hands on one, even if just for a few minutes. The Gravity Control is an interesting mechanism and one that real watch nerds with doubtless appreciate.
