The reunion's sounding weird and glorious.

There's a lot of "big if true" news happening at the moment. A good chunk of U.S. attention right now is focused on the latest potential crime from Donald Trump, namely ordering his lawyer Michael Cohen to lie to Congress, and, yes, that is a big deal but it's not like it would be surprising considering what these two have gotten up to in the past. Meanwhile there's legitimately shocking news out of England this weekend: the Spice Girls are looking for a replacement for Victoria Beckham.

The band has sold millions of tickets for a series of reunion shows. Unfortunately, it won't be a repeat of the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony where all five singers entered on top of taxis. Beckham won't be appearing with her former bandmates, citing work commitments. She told the Guardian, "I’m sure when they are on stage, a part of me will feel a bit left out. Because a part of me will always be a Spice Girl."

But apparently, rather than appear as a foursome, the four remaining Spice Girls are in the market for a new fifth, and they already have someone in mind. Melanie Chisholm has invited Saara Aalto, a Finnish pop star and former Eurovision contestant, to fill the slot, at least temporarily. It apparently started as a joke, but at least according to British tabloids it looks like it might be coming to life. Meanwhile, Melanie Brown has floated a wish list of higher-profile pop stars who might appear as guests, if not honorary Spice Girls themselves: namely Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and Adele.

It may seem weird—some might even say sacrilegious or perverse—to bring in a new Spice Girl more than 20 years after the bands heyday. But on the bright side, this opens some glorious possibilities, namely of an undying, constantly evolving girl group. As long as there are more singers and more adjectives, there can always be more Spice Girls.
