Robert Pattinson Took the Turtleneck-Suit Combo to Egypt

The actor—and longtime Dior ambassador—stepped out for the house’s latest menswear show, which was held at the Great Pyramid of Giza.

There is always something magnetic about a Robert Pattinson appearance on a red carpet, and not only because he appears on them so infrequently, although that helps. No, it’s his tendency to go to an event and instantly look like the most rakishly impish (or impishly rakish) person in the general vicinity. All that was only amped up by the fact that his most recent public appearance saw him making a red carpet debut with his girlfriend of four years, the model and actress Suki Waterhouse, at Dior’s massive pre-fall 2023 menswear show held at the Great Pyramid of Giza outside Cairo over the weekend, where the red carpet was actually made of sand.

For the event, Pattinson (a longtime Dior ambassador) and Waterhouse wore coordinated looks from the brand; he, in a slightly slouchy, bone-white suit worn over a thin brown turtleneck, his pant legs bunched over a pair of black lug-sole mules—a solid footwear choice for trekking across the sand—and his hair mussed somehow horizontally. They fit well in the setting of Dior’s desert show, which was an ode to the Dune planet of Arakkis, if it were primarily populated by beautiful men with great cheekbones. Which, according to Denis Villeneuve’s version of that universe, it sort of is.

Pattinson’s handsome hobgoblin schtick is, arguably, what most makes him a very fun brand spokesman—he became the face of Dior Homme fragrance way back in 2013, not long after his dovetailing turns in David Cronenberg’s finance-freak thriller Cosmopolis and the final installment of the Twilight saga. The actor, a proudly unserious public figure (he and Waterhouse have both copped to making things up during interviews for fun), even admitted to basing his preposterous Shakespearian French accent he deployed in the 2019 Netflix movie The King on the voices of the French staffers at House Dior: “I was talking to someone at Dior…and I started mimicking them and doing it in this funnier way,” he told GQ earlier this year. “I started doing it as a joke at first, but then I filmed myself and watched it back, and thought this actually kinda works.”
