A quiet fishing trip for a father and son ended in a terrifyingly encounter with a great white shark which tried to take a chunk out of their boat.

Arron Piekarski was fishing with his father off of Cape Elizabeth Point on the Yorke Peninsula in Adelaide on Tuesday when the beast made a beeline towards them.

The shark's fin is seen emerging from the water in the distance as the fishermen on board quickly prepared for what the unpredictable creature might do.

But the animal made a bold move that the men did not expect - the great white went for the slab of beer that was on the boat.

The shark leapt out of the water and tried to bite the black box the alcohol was stored in.

When the shark failed, it changed tactic and went underwater nosed the boast in an attempt to throw the box overboard.

The shark quickly admitted defeat and eventually submerged itself back in the water's murky depths.

'I was out fishing for whiting and squid with my dad and really out of nowhere it come up from the back of the boat,' Mr Piekarski told Daily Mail Australia.

'It hung around for probably five minutes or so doing laps of the boat.

He said he pushed passed those feelings and getting the shark on camera was more the priority in this instance.

'We had a similar experience a couple of years ago and we were more excited to get some good footage,' he said.
