Adam Rooney scored 11 goals in 42 appearances for Aberdeen last season

Salford City have signed striker Adam Rooney from Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen for an undisclosed fee.

Salford, a club part-owned by five former Manchester United players, will play in the National League for the first time in 2018-19.

Rooney, 30, joined the Dons from Oldham Athletic in 2014 and has scored 87 goals in 194 appearances.

Aberdeen will face Premier League club Burnley in the second qualifying round of the Europa League later this month.

Instead of potential involvement in that tie, Rooney has chosen to return to England, where he started his career with Stoke, later playing for Birmingham City.

Salford were taken over by Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt in 2014, and have won three promotions in four seasons to climb up to England's fifth tier.

"I had a great time at Aberdeen but when I heard of the interest from Salford, it was something that really intrigued me," Rooney told the club website.

"[The club] wants to get as high up as possible and hopefully I can help the club achieve that by scoring goals and help push the club up through the leagues."

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes said:external-link "We wish Adam all the very best with his new venture and it is always with a heavy heart when you lose a good player who is also a really good person.

"Since I signed Adam four and a half years ago, he has given us nothing but good value and has been a fantastic boy to work with."

    Rooney must have been offered a way into coaching, can't see any other reason to drop down to Junior standard of league.

    Or it could be the reported £5K a week they are going to pay him.

    Only Griffiths has more goals in the Premiership. As a Dundee fan I certainly won’t miss Rooney’s goals against us. Top player, wish him all the best down south.

    No matter which team in Scotland you support, you must admire his natural instinct for goals. Salford have got a bargain and Adam Rooney will at least get more starts with them than he did with Aberdeen last season.
    Mistake from the Dons and they should have kept him and paid for his coaching badges.

    It's not. It lives within it's means. And further to that the Season Ticket sales in the Scottish Premiership are very healthy.

    If club owners in the English 5th tier want to throw money around to buy their way up the league then so be it. I'd rather my club is run on an even keel, spending only what it can afford.

    Good finisher, I think He's a bit slow for what DM wants. Played out of position last year too.

    Definitely be missed for his goals. I hope Aberdeen don't regret letting a proven goalscorer go.

    I find this quite surprising even though the Scottish prem is not a strong league it is still better playing the likes of rangers Celtic hibs and hearts than non league football

    Here bulldug - Scottish football is the best supported league in Europe per person in relation to population. Engerlund are only able to offer outrageous wages due to the money you get from sky . You should be leading the world but you're not you're the rich kid in three playground with nice boots but no pals. NEVER forget it

    Yep. Great opportunity for us English to have a dig about poor standard of Scottish football, but don't be so shallow. We can all name many great Scottish players over the years who've come and improved our teams, and by luck of the TV money draw we can now pay kids with no first team experience thousands a week. That's nothing to crow about.
    I'd much rather see the next Dalglish or Law found.

    Cue all the losers who wait for a story like this to go on about Scottish football being so much weaker than England. It's like if everytime a decent footballer joins the Chinese league them sending out a press release to the people of Myanmar to say "see, told you we're better!". Get a life.

    He wasn't getting a regular game at Aberdeen. At his age, with decent money on the table, a good move for him. He'll get a regular game at that level.
