Jarrod Bowen and Justin James have been handed their first England call-ups but there is no room for in-form Leicester attacker James Maddison.

Fikayo Tomori has also been handed a recall by Gareth Southgate for the forthcoming Nations League games against Hungary, Germany and Italy.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is a surprise omission from the 27-man squad, as is Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings. Southgate confirmed on Tuesday that Henderson's omission is to give the 31-year-old some much-needed rest following a hectic campaign.

He said: 'The decision around Jordan Henderson, who’s had 60-plus games this season, is going into a Champions League final, and is 32-years-old, I don’t need to know any more about him.'

Sportsmail reported on Monday night that Bowen was in line for his debut call-up to the England squad and his inclusion has now been confirmed.

Leicester defender Justin has long been admired by Southgate and has been included for the first time.

Tomori is back in the squad after winning the Serie A title with AC Milan, while Ben White and Marc Guehi are also included - though there is doubt over their fitness with both nursing injuries.

There had been a clamour for Maddison to be included following a string of impressive displays but he is not in the squad.

James Maddison was also left out of the squad despite his solid goalscoring form for Leicester

Southgate revealed on Tuesday that the Leicester star's exclusion is down to the strength of competition in England's attacking-midfield slots, with Mason Mount and Phil Foden preferred.

On Maddison he said: 'He’s finished the season very well; he’s obviously scoring goals. We just feel we are very happy with the players who have been with us in that area of the pitch, and he’s competing with Mount and Foden in the areas of the field where he is at his best.

'It’s a couple of positions where there is a lot of strength in depth. There will always be a debate about a player you don’t pick but to do that you have got to leave somebody out who is equally or even more deserving.'

Southgate on Henderson

'This is also a chance to see a bit more of some players. The decision around Jordan Henderson, who’s had 60-plus games this season, is going into a Champions League final, and is 32-years-old, I don’t need to know any more about him.'

No Maddison

James Maddison enjoyed a fine season with Leicester, scoring 18 goals and laying on 12 assists as Brendan Rodgers' men finished eighth and reached the Europa League semis.

But there was no room for him in this England squad, with Mason Mount, Conor Gallagher and James Ward-Prowse preferred.

The Leicester faithful won't be too pleased...

Southgate on Bowen

'Consistently strong performances. We were certainly thinking about involving him in March before he got injured.

'He’s a goal threat, he’s direct, his journey is really interesting in terms of the experiences he’s had, it’s a reminder that you don’t just have to be at an elite academy and come through that pathway, playing in the lower divisions and to have that experience is a great route to go.

'He works incredibly hard for the team, which we want all our forward players top do. He’s thoroughly deserved his call up.'

Justin delight

Another player to have received a first call-up is James Justin, although the Leicester defender's inclusion is much more of a surprise than Bowen's.

Southgate has opted for Justin despite the fact he only returned from a lengthy spell on the sidelines at the end of January and has slowly been regaining march sharpness ever since, with the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Tyrick Mitchell missing out.

The latest England squad includes no natural left-backs, yet Justin is also capable of operating in that position.

Debut call-up for Bowen

As anticipated, Bowen has received his first England call-up on the back of an outstanding campaign for West Ham.

The Hammers will be delighted that their star man has received international recognition, and it's clearly been a long time coming for him...

14:08
Henderson, Mings out

There is no room for Jordan Henderson or Tyrone Mings in Southgate's Nations League squad.

Henderson has captained Liverpool to the FA Cup and League Cup this season, and he could add the Champions League to his collection this weekend.

It remains to be seen whether the Reds skipper's exclusion is the result of an agreement with Southgate or simply a tactical decision.

Mings, meanhile, has been left out at the expense of Tomori, who has earned a return to the squad after his brilliant season in Itaky.

Three Lions schedule

Here is England's fixture list over the next month as they gear up for their latest Nations League campaign:

Saturday 4 June - 5pm: Hungary (A)

Tuesday 7 June - 7:45pm: Germany (A)

Saturday 11 June - 7:45pm: Italy (H)

Tuesday 14 June - 7:45pm: Hungary (H)

Defensive dilemma

Southgate has two injuries to bear in mind at the back, with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi (ankle) and Arsenal's Ben White (hamstring) carrying problems.

The duo's fitness concerns could open the door for Tomori, who will still be buoyant after a successful season with Milan.

The former Chelsea defender played a key part in Stefano Pioli's side beating Inter Milan in the Serie A title race, having formed a solid partnership at centre-back with Pierre Kalulu.

Will the Scudetto triumph be enough to earn him a call-up?

Rashford and Sancho set to miss out

The good news for Bowen is that Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho appear set to miss out on a place in Southgate's squad after disappointing campaigns at Old Trafford.

Sancho and Rashford were part of the side that reached the Euro 2020 final last year, both missing penalties in their shootout defeat against Italy.

But according to Sky Sports News, they are in line to be dropped by Southgate and replaced by Bowen for next month's Nations League outings.

Bowen on the cusp

When Southgate's latest England squad drops at 2pm all eyes will be on whether Bowen has been rewarded for his superb year with West Ham.

The 25-year-old registered 18 goals and 13 assists for David Moyes' men, helping them reach the Europa League semi-finals and secure a seventh-place Premier League finish.

He stands a brilliant chance of earning his first international call-up today, but whether Southgate finds room for him remains to be seen...

Who will make the cut?

Gareth Southgate is set to announce his England squad for upcoming Nations League fixtures against Hungary, Germany and Italy this afternoon - and he certainly has some big decisions to make.

It wasn't too long ago that his Three Lions side came agonisingly close to winning Euro 2020, but a lot has changed over the past year and there are now a host of other players knocking on Southgate's door.

Jarrod Bowen enjoyed a breathtaking season at West Ham, while Fikayo Tomori's solid form out in Italy with AC Milan helped the club become Serie A champions.

Nevertheless, several of Southgate's regular stars also impressed in the 2021/22 campaign, including the likes of Mason Mount, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice.

So who will he pick? The latest England squad is due to be announced at 2pm.
