He does have a point. But it could also apply everyone, not just 'ethnic' types. But quite a few engineering types.
You ever been to SciFi con? They'll put a similar reminder in the webpage and con rules.

That's good advice for everyone. Start singling out generalities about regions and ethnicities with millions of people and you deserve to get knocked upside the head.

The headline itself made it sound reasonable. Then the article... jeez. You can't just go single out ethnic groups. "And YOUR momma smells like curry! And YOUR momma smells..." Come on.

I used to have a drawer full of sample-size deodorants for boys when their pits were up and running. The end of the day, at my 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. after-school classes, some of the boys' showers had worn off and they'd already been through recess and basketball. In Phoenix. Blech.

Sometimes I'd have to pull one aside and say, "It's been a long day. Here's some deodorant until you can get home and get a shower." None of them ever broke down. They'd thank me and I'd tell them to keep it in their backpack just in case. But deodorant melts at like 110 degrees, so it didn't last long. That's why I kept a drawer full. "If you ever need an extra, I've got a bunch. Don't be afraid to ask."

But we're talking about 12-15-year-olds. Not college students.

Get your hygiene together!

Once you've hit like 13, you're going to smell terrible at the end of the day, no matter what country you're from!

Years ago I had a grad student in my program who was a middle-aged Harley rider. He wore bike leathers every day and chain smoked nasty cigars. OMG he was ripe during the hot days in the high mountain desert! Those leathers held the rancid smell of cigar smoke, B.O., stale beer, and cheap cologne. He was smart and an excellent student, but smelly AF! I was in my late 20s, pregnant, and had to have a come to Jesus talk with him about how I, and others, could not deal. It has been nearly three decades since then and I can still recall how awful that whole situation was. He was mortified. It was awful.

/The professor's open letter was bad form IMHO.

OnceMoreWithFeeling: ... /The professor's open letter was bad form IMHO.

You mean the contents of the letter were bad form, or you mean writing an open letter as opposed to individually addressing smelly students was bad form? An open letter seems like a decent idea, it just shouldn't have singled out specific regions of the world or distinguished between American and foreign students generally. It's enough to present the reasons to shower regularly, wear fresh clothes, and use deodorant.

If you only shower in the morning, how would it affect your odor in class or at work?

Not if you use diaper rash cream in your armpits.  The 40% zinc oxide in the cream kills the odor-causing bacteria all day long, no matter the amount you sweat.  To prove it, I've worked outdoors in 100° + (F) temps with other guys for hours, and then we did a comparison with our noses.  Lots of surprised looks followed by lots of converts. The stuff washes out of cotton completely in the laundry.

It's a different calculation for ladies, because the stuff stains silk and synthetic fabrics and stays white on your body.

Baking soda works the same way, but is probably a tiny bit (or a whole lot) less expensive, and much more widely available.

I stopped using "deodorant" in my early twenties, and never turned back.

Now the university is going to have to build more safe spaces and update and reprint the sensitivity handbook. Not to mention the cost of the retreat for faculty to learn how to implement it.

Good to know - thanks.  I'm generally not a DIY'er, though; I don't care to make my own paste from baking soda.  For ladies, though, preserving their clothing might be a worthwhile trade-off.

A couple of guys at work might benefit from reading that letter, especially two guys from somewhere in the Middle East.  You can actually tell which elevator they used well over an hour after they used it.

But it sure isn't limited to people from other countries.  Back in my days as a supervisor I had to give two plain ol' American guys the "take a goddam shower" talk.  My female counterpart had to have the talk with a female coworker, also 100% American. They just reeked and I think the only reason I remember their names is because they smelled so bad.

The worst smells from my travels:
- those who smell like they never wipe
- those who use so much cologne/perfume you think they used that much to cover up the fact they didn't bathe
- those who have 'issues' that smell like rotting fish, or a full-on yeast infection smelling like tacos, onions or worse, wet bread.
- And of course drunk-person-vomit smell.

And that's on top of the curry-sweat, garlic-sweat, chili pepper, and overuse of baby powder smells. And lets not forget those white boy super-stinky feet that burn your nasal passages and curl nose hairs from how sour they are.

At the end of the day, everyone: every ethnicity, gender, age... there are potential odors. And not all of them are pleasant to everyone. When you are in a place like a professional workplace, school, or confined spaces like busses, planes, or trains, fresh clothes daily, wash daily, and if you use ANY sort of deodorant, cologne, powders or creams, use them SPARINGLY! The scent should be MILD/FAINT, not overpower the room.

My advice has always been this:
Cologne/Parfum: Eau De Toilette for DAY, Full-on stuff for NIGHT, and no more than 3 pumps of the sprayer. If you use more than that, you are offending people.
Shower daily - and please use soap, shampoo, and wash everything from head to toe.
Clean clothes daily - re-wearing anything can not only make you smell offensive faster, but can often lead to bacterial and yeast infections in your skin causing even worse odors. Ask any teenage boy with sweaty feet how his shoes smell after a month in Texas!
Clean your sheets, too - just like clothes, they can trigger bad body odors to be stronger or happen sooner in the day.
And as always - dress for the conditions you are in! If it's hot, wear breathable clothing type stuff, or cover skin that may come in contact with shared seating spaces (i.e. showing midriff sitting in a plane seat where someone's back sweat is now on your back)

Professor was 100% correct until he got into the racism. You don't need to start calling out individual nationalities for how smelly you think they are or why. It's not because they're Indian or Vietnamese; it's because they're engineering students and the white ones stink just as bad.  Just tell them to use deodorant and move on.

By the way.  Want some un-PC Real Talk? As a white dude who has moved around a bit: *Nothing* makes you smell worse than a diet heavy in dairy products and red meat. Especially cheese. Nothing makes you smell worse than cheese. Americans don't notice because they're always, *always* either reeking of rotted milk or surrounded by other people who are.
