PS5 beats Nintendo Switch in huge November for UK game sales

The next generation has started out promising for Sony.

In what was a huge month for sales overall, the PS5 has come out ahead of any other console in the UK. This sees Sony atop the charts as the market begins to settle into a new generation.

The new generation launched last month, with excitement at a fever pitch as players finally got their hands on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Also, with buyers and families getting ready for the holiday period, it has created a cocktail of circumstances that's meant stock shortages have made it very hard for consumers to secure their consoles.

According to GfK data (via GamesIndustry.biz), that has played out as expected in the markets. Overall, some 900,000 consoles were sold in November, making it the eighth biggest month for console sales in the UK. Impressively, it also makes it the second-biggest month for console revenue. The only other month that beat it was December 2013 when the PS4 and Xbox One became more readily available after their initial launches.

That likely speaks to promising numbers for the console as it begins to become easier to find.

The Nintendo Switch fell to second in the sales chart for only the third time in two years. However, there is certainly no reason for Nintendo to be worried. The Switch still remains to sell impressively. The console was up in sales 96% over the previous month and 63% year-over-year. Nintendo Switch games also made up 35% of all physical games sold last month too.

Elsewhere, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the top-selling boxed game with Assassin's Creed Valhalla trailing just behind. FIFA 21, Spider-Man Miles Morales, and Watch Dogs: Legion came third, fourth and fifth respectively.
