Joychild

Documenting a Trans Child’s Poignant Revelation It’s probably the best memory I have, telling you, ‘I’m not a girl,’ for the first time. But it’s probably the worst memory, too, because that was so hard for me.

In its short runtime, “Joychild” makes a clarifying emotional argument: the only humane and reasonable response to trans children is to listen with generosity as they try to express hard-earned truths about themselves.

A brief video interview with the director Aurora Brachman (captioned).

The 5+ minute documentary has closed captions. The review is available on archive here, but the video unfortunately can only be viewed through the above link.

It was refreshing to see this story told through the child's words and not the parent's—and I say this as someone who once went viral writing about my trans four-year-old.

Wow.

That was really powerful. The eloquence of the child is levels above that of most adults. I am so happy for kids that have understanding parents and a more accepting society to come into. And my heart aches for those who do not have this safe space.

“I’m sorry it was hard”

Damn it's dusty in here.

That was really really sweet.

Also, camp indigo (summer camp for trans kids) is awesome (the kid was wearing their shirt).
