Someone died due to his intentional actions and he gets less than two years. That's goddamn stupid.

Wow. I'm pretty conservative on how much time people should get for jail terms (as in, not much, vs. Conservative which = lots), and even I think this person deserves a decade or more.

Did they misspell 'months'?

Because 15 months for getting an innocent man killed because of a horrible prank doesn't sound right.

It's 15 years, right?  Right?

This pisses me off the most. It doesn't matter if the impetus of the call was fabricated, that doesn't absolve the police department from behaving professionally and appropriately. A sniper shooting without orders from across the street when closer cops hadn't fired? Officer Rapp should be in prison and the DA would let him off the hook should be charged with obstruction.

They guy that actually placed the call got 20 years. The person in this article "merely" solicited the act.

/ sentence still seems kind of light

This judge pretty much admitted that police are violent asshats, and that anyone calling on them should know that.

"While handing out the sentence, Melgren said he could have predicted consequences for calling an armed police force to respond to a reported escalating situation of violence."

That no one who matters sees a problem with this is f*cked up. Swatting wouldn't be a thing if police weren't such a bunch of unaccountable thugs.

Dumbass tag is well deserved by "justice". This isn't justice at all. Asshole got an innocent person killed. Asshole needs to be sent to prison for YEARS. Or maybe send a SWAT team to kill this turd by surprise.

The only "large sentences" the police will have to deal with is a couple of lengthy paragraphs on the report about the murder of this guy.

prosecutors decided not to press charges against the officer who shot him and thought Finch reached for a gun in his waistband.

As a cop, your job is to put up with being scared that someone might be reaching for something. That is why we pay you. If, as a society, we just wanted everyone dead who was acting hinkey, we'd save a lot of money by just firing all the cops, and running around armed and shooting each other the moment anyone got the least bit out of order. Think of all the money we'd save! But we don't want that.

Your job is to put yourself in dangerous situations and err on the side of caution. You don't get to be judge, jury, and executioner until you're 100% goddamned sure that the person who is "reaching for something" actually has a something that's a loaded gun that's going to shoot you, and even then you better have exhausted every possible de-escalation option.

Is that scary? Sure. Is it dangerous? Yup. Might it get you killed? Sure might. But that's literally what we pay you for. If you're so much of a goddamned drippy, scared little pussy that you just go banging away at everyone who "might" be reaching for "something," then go do something else. Go be a WalMart greeter. That might be more your style. We don't need you as a cop. There are over 300 million people in this country. If you can't handle that job description, I GUARANTEE you I can immediately find someone else who can.

2019-09-16 5:38:44 AM
Depending on your salary, cheaper than hiring a hitman; and any hitman who would do it for less than 15 months of your salary, is either a cop or probably blackmail you for more afterwards.

That's what my BF in Canada says, he knows a lot about that kinda stuff- you wouldn't know him.

It's pretty bad when you can get people killed just by calling the police. The kid needs to be held responsible in a much bigger way but the system that makes death a very possible end result of a 'swatting' is broken as well.

A completely innocent peson opened their door and was summarily executed, and you don't see a problem with that.

Police are expected to actually investigate reports, and not just take every call at face value. Even the bare minimum here wasn't performed.
