Nah, the Chinese have been quashing political dissent for thousands of years. They are pretty good at it, because when the screw turns, it turns HARD...

Take that back. If they government issues a statement like this, then I'll concede the point.

"The protestors were warned. They were given an explanation. Nevertheless, they persisted."

Last protest the LEOs put dye in the water to easily ID those deemed worthy of reeducation.  Week before that the PRC LEOs had paintball guns where the projectiles had permanent dye inside.  Umbrellas don't stop that sh*t.   Hong Kong has a huge number of cameras on every corner and other places.  Tracking someone dyed a highly visible color becomes an exercise in utility.  Taking one or two protestors at a time by flying squads is much quieter and more promptly made double plus unvisible.

Seldom can I catch a glimpse of some foreign government and understand its purpose. Its need.

The people aren't very interesting. Controlling them would garner most little. Harming them would bring undesired attention.

Perhaps I don't have what it takes to be part of government.

"It endangers our pocketbook".  You think that's all there is to it?

Alright, what paths forward do you have?  Is open warfare acceptable?  How about escalation to nuclear conflict?  Thanks to Trump's idiocies, the world is more of a tinderbox now than it was 4 years ago.  So what plans do you have for Hong Kong that don't result in millions dead, or are those dead acceptable?

Things were quiet Friday and mostly Saturday since most people took a break for Mid-Autumn Festival family time. HKG was a ghost town Saturday night, between the lock-down (you currently need an ID and flight itinerary just to get into the airport) and the cancelled "stress test". There was a brawl at Amoy Plaza on Saturday afternoon, but most people were saving their energy for Sunday.

And, as one might expect from the entrepreneurial capital of the world, there are now a bunch of shops in Sham Shui Po that specialise in protester safety gear. The HKPF were all over them on Saturday but couldn't do much other than disrupt, since it was all defensive/protective gear.

Actually there is some evidence that some of the firebombers are plants by the chinese.  Some of the subway violence was caused by military aged men all dressed similar. Also, some firebombers have been photographed being armed with pistols (which only police have).  It is scattered and certainly some protesters have had it up to here, but china appears to be doing its part to ensure that police have a pretext to go in hard.

Why would someone willingly compromise their message by resorting to terrorist tactics?  I didn't say every protestor is paid by China, that's just ludicrous.  But the ones who used violence are only hurting whatever message they're trying to send.  If you think China ISN'T paying any of the violent protestors, you're living in fantasy land.
