U.S. Southern Command said Sunday that a Russian-made SU-30 Flanker Venezuelan fighter jet followed a U.S. EP-3 Aries II aircraft at an "unsafe distance"

It's too bad we didn't join the ICC, we could nail them for tailgating.

Maybe the Venezuelan jet was monitoring international airspace too? If it isn't your airspace you can't complain about others using it too. The U.S military sure spends a lot of time and money keeping tabs on what everyone else is doing.

Probably.  That would be about the one thing that could unite Venezuelans against the US and keep Maduro in power, so Trump will manage it somehow.

NewportBarGuy: I'm shocked they have pilots.

I'm shocked that they could pay for both. But, as Maduro's shipped much of the country's wealth to Russia, he's essentially indentured the country to Putin. I'm betting, as others have said in the thread, that those were Russian jets with Russian "advisors" in them, hoping that they could manufacture a pretext by which Maduro could then claim an all-out conflict with the U.S.

I'm sure you're always perfectly accepting when someone chooses to tailgate you on a wide-open freeway, and swerves all around you at speed, all while holding a clearly-visible pistol.

After all, they have every right to use public roads, just like you do. Hell, you really shouldn't be provoking them in the first place by driving past their town.

Russian gear.

Russia wants the US to bomb the shiat out Venezuela.

The right wing Trump loving Duque in Colombia has already agreed to let the USA stage an attack using Colombian bases.

Colombian has been progessing and has become an economic power in Latin America who get money from the USA and now China has built some infrastructure  there.

So what will happen is that we go to war with Venezuela.

Colombia facilitates.  This will turn Latin America against Colombia because they helped the US bomb their own continent.

These will sour other countries from doing business in Colombia and start to destabilize it's economy.

Venezuela will get pissed and sneak a few fighters over the border and razz  Bogota.  This will destabilize the country and leave it wide open for the Russians.

Trump is helping Putin destabilize the world.

On a Carrier and did some war games against the Australian Air Force.  all our planes came back in full air wing formation.  On the 1MC, they announced, "Final score: USS Constellation 124, Australian Air Force, 5."

Was actually surprised that the jet was as "current" as it is.  Apparently the Sukhoi Su-30 first flew in 1989 and put in service in 1996

Our Venezualan friends are flying the Su-30MK2.  The first two Su-30MK2s arrived in early December 2006 while another eight were commissioned during 2007; 14 more aircraft arrived in 2008. A second batch of 12 Su-30MKV was also being considered in 2009. It has 24 Su-30MK2s as of January 2012.  In October 2015, Venezuela announced the purchase of 12 more Su-30MK2 from Russia for $480 million.

Su-30MK2 is a modernized Su-30MKK for China, Indonesia and Uganda with advanced avionics and weapons.

How is this a giveaway?  Venezuela has operated Flankers for years. Between flying those and their F-16 fleet, they have decent enough pilots of their own to chase down an EP-3.

Well that wasn't so much of a shootdown as a 'idiot fighter jock overestimated his ability', which just goes to show that fighter jock mentality is truly universal.

I'm presuming your handle refers to your EEG.

Venezuela has no bombers, not would it help them fulfill your fantasy even if they did. They have a limited number of fighter/attack planes that could possibly be used for small bombing runs. They aren't stealthy and they aren't up to engaging US air superiority fighters. Their entire air force would be outnumbered and outgunned by one carrier air wing.

Aw hell yeah. You'd best believe that rubble would be bombed until it was unrecognizable as rubble. Perhaps instead appearing as stacks upon stacks of squandered taxpayer cash.

Legacy
More than 40 U.S. aircraft were downed by Soviet forces.

If you want to learn more about it, this is an excellent book on the subject:

He has another book that touches on the subject, but is mostly about satellite surveillance:

And of course the NSA has a bunch of information on the subject:
