One of those cases where the mistake doesn't even seem unreasonable though unfortunate, but the lack of action on UHaul's part to actually help her is atrocious.

Also no more saying '____ can't comment on pending litigation." You WON'T comment, not "can't".

Their legal counsel probably instructed them not to comment. So no, it's likely they can't comment.

Happened to my sister in law. She was adopted, and included in her things in the locker (which had been set up on auto-pay for years) was a letter from her birth mother. It was the only thing she had connecting her to her birth mother.

Storage spaces are terrible for keeping anything valuable or irreplaceable. Sometimes, though, people really need a central, safe place for their things.

That sucks, hope she makes out really well in court.

The one time I rented a locker from U-Haul we never saw the same employee twice. It was the weirdest freaking thing that turned into a running joke.

The cynic in me would say that "Hey, they're just physical things. Both you and your husband are in frail health, so it's not like you'll need any of those things for long. The universe did you a favor"

But then the empath in me knows just how hard people work for physical things - like how I saved up for years for my car, and nearly broke down when I couldn't afford repairs until my parents stepped in, which was still hard for me to accept since I still see myself as independent. I'd be utterly devastated if my car, or any other one of the possessions I worked hard for or have a personal attachment to, suddenly disappeared.

So yeah, I'd hate to be in her position and I'm glad she's suing. Hopefully whatever she gets can help up her quality of life with what time she has left with her husband.

Years ago (before assorted reality TV shows cane along), a friend of mine and I had a business buying estates/storage lockers/etc and reselling the assorted stuff.  90% of the time we'd go through the locker/s right after the auction to see what we got.  Any really personal things (photos, yearbooks, letters, etc) would get put in a box and dropped off at the front office on the way out.  Most of the other buyers there would do the same thing with the lockers they bought.  What the front office would do/how long they kept the stuff, I don't know, but we did try to keep the karma scales somewhat balanced in the middle of what was probably a really crappy time in the foreclosed person's life.

/we did keep one really personal item and disposed of it ourselves
//there was a Snapple bottle filled with ashes & 'Grandma' written on the lid.  On the way home we stopped in a park and spread her under a tree overlooking the river
///and for the three - the phrase "you never know just what you'll find" was certainly true that day

i had the displeasure of working their 3rd shift breakdown hotline for a while.  It's by far, the worst company i've worked for.  When a truck would be undriveable and the customer had to stay at a hotel, they'd confirm that we were going to reimburse them for their troubles.  We were directed to say "save your receipts and discuss it with the drop off location at your destination.  We would never "say" you would be reimbursed, and Joe McGas station on the other side of the country would almost never reimburse the customer for charges that came up.

My experience with U-Haul told me to never, ever deal with them in any capacity.

Among other things, I found out that U-Haul trucks are notorious for breaking down.  I didn't need to deal with that when moving 650 miles, with all my stuff, two cats, and nobody to assist transferring everything to another truck.

I originally reserved a U-Haul truck for the movebut found a much larger, and cheaper, truck with Penske.  I cancelled the U-Haul reservation about a month before I moved and they kept calling me and trying all sorts of BS sales mind tricks, trying to guilt me or brow beat me into using them, for a smaller truck, for more money.  Their tactics ranged from absolutely pathetic to downright insulting.

They called me probably 12 times and I wasn't rude the first 3 or 4 times - hey, people just doing their jobs, right? - but they just wouldn't let it go and kept calling after I asked them to stop.  By the 7th call it would go "Hi, I'm Jenny from U-Ha..I TOLD YOUR COMPANY TO STOP CALLING ME AND I WILL NEVER USE U-HAUL, EVER.  Do I need to explain any of those words?  Because you're the Xth person from U-Haul to call me after I said don't call me again."

I really feel for the lady in TFA.  Sounds like a simple clerical fark up, and I'll bet there's something in the fine print of her rental agreement that lets U-Haul off the hook.

Are U-Haul locations like franchises or something?  In the small town i'm in with a single U-Haul rental/storage place, this seems like it would not happen.  The older lady and her husband who run it do any mechanical work needed on the trucks that are there, and are the warmest, friendliest people you can expect to meet.  They always guarantee what they do, and have never in the years I've dealt with them had trouble going out of their way if there were any problems.  Perhaps corporate can't say the same, but if I didn't read about how crappy U-Haul is, they would absolutely have me believe otherwise.

The last time we used them, the husband drove the truck to the house for me.  The wife called after the move to ask if everything had gone well (not just with the truck, but overall), and offered me and my brother a home cooked meal after a hard day work moving his stuff.

It would be closer to her possessions were worth $12,000, they offered $6,000, and they required her to sign a NDA not to talk about it or that she couldn't say anything bad about U-Haul.

And it would still not be enough. If a person did something like that they would need to reimburse the lost belongings, some tort and then also try to explain that it wasn't theft, honest, please don't put me in jail. So either CEOs go to jail when these kinds of things happen, or they pay more.

green_chile_cheeseburger: Are U-Haul locations like franchises or something?

Depends.  They have what amount to corporate stores, and also independent-ish dealers that are pretty much working on commission.  Corporate ops are - somewhat non-surprisingly - corporate.  Independents vary widely.  Personally had better luck dealing with the dealers than the corp stores.  Corp stores have zero slack in pricing/availability, dealers can play with the demand system a bit and try to get you a saner rate on longer trips.  (Neither one is going to budge much on local trips, but that's usually nbd."  Also, be sure to check other truck rental companies - in no way is UHaul always cheapest or best.  Penske, Ryder, whoever - it's worth seeing what they got and what the terms are.

/do remember that the rental system for one way trips works on availability at where you're dropping it off
//in other words, if they have 341 trucks clogging up Sheboygan, and they don't need more, it's gonna cost you to drop it there
///worth checking to see if there's another reasonably close to your destination dropoff - can chop 20% or more off the bill if that location needs trucks

You do know when it goes to court, the estimate of value will be made public, right?  Because court does require them to show actual damages, and everything stated in court becomes open to the public.  Anyone not in the courtroom, can look up court documents that will have the estimated value.  Not that the last part matters, since the court will decide the award.

NotThatGuyAgain: Sounds like a simple clerical fark up, and I'll bet there's something in the fine print of her rental agreement that lets U-Haul off the hook.

If they put something like that in fine print, it will mean nothing in court.  Not everything in contracts are enforceable, and I seriously doubt storage companies can say they are not responsible for lost items, since if they are not responsible, there is no reason to pay them.  Anyone can buy a shed, people pay storage places for security.  This also goes for people storing items too large for a unit, like boats, and camping trailers.  The storage place next to my job is used by an armor truck company to park their trucks at night.
