Boy, 8, wins crappie contest grand prize: a new boat, motor and trailer

So who's getting the tax bill? I suppose if he files next year, the standard deduction would probably take care of most of it.

/good for the kid

No kidding. He's lucky he's not in CA; that rig would probably ost him a few thousand per year in registration and slip fees. No way any HOA nazis will allow a boat trailer in the yard.

Maybe the one he caught to win the prize?

The winner last year was 12 years old.

The winner comes from hitting a "secret weight" rather than the biggest (last year was 0.63 lbs), so a kid is actually more likely to win it.

"Did you clean my room and finish my laundry and put away the dishes?"

Me neither.  I was sailing offshore at that age...without an engine.  In the ocean.

Hey, and if I ever 6 years he'll be popular with the girls.

"Hey baby, want to go make out in my boat?"

If I'd had a boat I could have gotten it on with Ellie Fisher. Oh sweet sweet Elle, only 14 years old, but it isn't creepy because I was 14 to!

Children being in title on real and personal property is a problem that their legal guardians must deal with.

They may work it that way due to the laws in the state. I find it odd that the winning weight is secret.

Think it is like the secret word on the old "You bet your life" with Groucho Marx.  Just some random, likely to be caught (ie, not "wow, big fish" nor "how did you hook something that small") weight and someone gets lucky. All you have to do to be a contender is catch ONE fish...

The event organizers pick a "secret weight", the person that catches the fish weighing as close to that secret weight as possible wins the boat.

Well, that's, less interesting.  So he won a lottery.  Thanks for the explanation.  I just thought this was about...well...some accomplishment.

I agree with trappedspirithere.  Unless I'm missing something that doesn't make sense.  He caught a .93 lb crappy, but the 1st prize caught a 1.22 and the fifth caught a .97¿
Shouldn't the 5th place kid have come in first???

The point wasn't "Biggest". It was a specific weight unknown to the contestants. Not a big deal. It was for fun and in writing. Fish don't want to be caught so I doubt they were involved in this nefarious plot.

Then I had Fish and Chips. American style Malt Vinegar sucks.
