The first nuclear plant I worked in dropped a missile block (for context, this is actually a large cement block that sits over the reactor in case shiat goes down and it tries to launch the control rods). I was in the ice condenser at the time and I swear to god, it rang the entire building like a gong. No damage. Sent a lot of dust flying though and scared the bejeezus out of us.

I bring up this Cool Story Sibling because supposedly, the nuclear plant just north saw it on their seismograph and phoned down to the plant I was at like "...y'all still there? Just checking. Okay."

/was also at ANO when the crane broke and they dropped the stator
//that shiat echoed through the whole ass valley

idk knowing what size explosion they use to test. can't someone then figure out what safety factor they are using or something and figure out what size explosion the carrier can't take ?  not a engineer but seem that kinda of info should not be out.

I think once the big badaboom gets to a certain point it really doesn't matter.

Also...what was the game plan if it failed this test?  Oopsie-poopsie, or....?

The idea is it's better to sink a shiat boat before people is on it than to find out a near miss is enough to damage the hull in an engagement

I mean I understand the thinking behind it, I just have to wonder what the room would be like if it just tipped over and started sinking.

I imagine silence.  Followed by the sound of shiat bricks from dozens of people.

I reckon bricks would be shat, but it's like bullet proofing.  Better to watch the expensive things fail in a stress test before you're in it.

Pretty sure it had a mostly full crew other than an aircraft detachment. Got to have people to handle damage control and then prepare for the next blast.

^^^This^^^

Unnecessary in water shock testing of the hull and drive system. What is the point? The ship can still work if a mine, torpedo or missile MISSES the farking ship by 150 yards?

This bullshiat is nothing more than another excuse for the contractors to bill the DOD another $150 million dollars after the ship is launched while killing everything in the ocean within a 1 mile radius.

The shock wave can be brutal on the ship, and have been known to stall the ship engine. Think about that, the shockwave was so severe that it stopped the propeller on a ship.

Not really the point. Shock testing, which the Navy has been doing for decades, tells the Navy NOTHING about the ships survival capabilities other than it can withstand a near miss. I am pretty sure the entire point of attacking a Navy vessel is to actually HIT the farking thing.

When I was young we saw a truck stuck under a bridge and I asked my dad how they got them out.  He told me they had to blow up the truck, which I thought was super awesome.

Imagine my disappointment when I found out that they just let the air out of their tires and drag them back out.
