Apparently the power of 'Murica is stronger than any political affiliation.

The problem may be the arrogance of the general population.  More polite societies who understand that "public health"  ≠ "socialism" seem to be doing pretty good.

Good luck.

It was actually kind of embarassing.   We were out towards Giddings this weekend, stopping into a small junk store.    I didn't want to "antagonize" anybody by wearing a mask as we do in Houston, no sign posted, etc.    Imagine my embarrassment when in fact folks were wearing their masks.      I've been under the impression that outside the cities you can really make some enemies wearing one, but I was definitely wrong.

Speaking of Trump - Now that Cy Vance's kid is looking into the Trump organization and the Donald for Bank Fraud and Insurance Fraud that took place before he became president...

Will the Secret Service protection detail have to go to prison with him?  We're looking at major financial felonies (the only kind that really count) here.

I'm starting to believe that the #NoMasks and anti-masker stuff is just a small group of loud trolls, or perhaps even coming from a Russian troll farm without a lot of real-world evidence.  I rarely, if ever, see anybody in a public indoor space these days without a mask.

Up here in Washington, when masks were just encouraged, I was totally amazed how many younger - middle aged white males had breathing or medical issues that precluded them from wearing a mask.  It's real.

Now that masking up is mandatory, I only see a very few people maskless.

Good obit, and placing the blame where it lies.  On the leadership.  It is not TDS to blame Trump for the failure of this country to address Covid.  By any objective measure, the country has failed.  By a measure of straight data points, the country has failed.  You can't argue the simple facts.  The richest country in the world has left a moron in charge of its national government, and this current state of affairs is the result.  Trump promoted the idea that wearing a mask is a personal choice, a matter of freedom.  His echo chamber spread that idea.  Contrary to his statements, testing is not wildly available and in fact, seriously delinquent in number and speed.  He has actually held back testing, to make his "numbers" look good.  He promoted the idea of reopening, way before cases were on a downturn.  He has attacked healthcare, promoted the idea that public health should be a privilege, not a right.  In future examinations of this era, it would be hard for anyone to argue that Trump took a single step in the right direction to fight Covid, and that includes "sealing off" China, as he botched that as well.

This family's wrath is well placed.

It doesn't matter who the President is.  One side will think that he/she will save civilization and the other will think that he/she will destroy it.  We've reached that point.  Fark is a microcosm of this   If we don't pull out of this death spiral it doesn't matter who we elect this country will fail.  From my point of view, the spiral gets worse with each new President.  I didn't think it could get any worse than it was with Bush.  Then Obama got elected and it did indeed get worse.  And I thought it couldn't get any worse than that, then Trump.   I won't make that mistake again.

The left and right are so far divided that everything is political and everything is addressed in absolutes.  Just look at the protests.  One side justified the pillaging, burning, and destruction of the livelihoods and neighborhoods of those they were supposedly protesting to protect.  To the other side, nothing but pillaging and burning occurred.  Very few people acknowledged that there were a lot of people that were peacefully protesting and a much smaller number of shiatheads that took advantage to steal and be destructive.

Everything is used to drive us further and further apart.  There's gotta be someone or something behind that.  Or at least I hope there's someone or something behind it that can be found out and this can be stopped.  Because if this isn't being caused by an outside force it's not going to end well for anyone, left or right.

Trump is a wastrel and a clown. He's done jack-all to improve the crisis and has, at times, actively made it worse.

The reality is. It was going to be bad no matter who was in charge. It was too late in March. It was too late in February. We were always going to see a second wave. There were always going to be thousands dead and millions out of work.

But Trump did manage to make it worse than it would have been. So I'll give you that for sure.

The irony that I find in the protests versus the police overresponse is that the argument is the same on either side.

The minority being assholes do not represent everyone else. It's a relative minority on both sides wreaking havoc for the rest.

On the police side of the issue the problem is the thin blue line culture. On the protesters side the issue is that even the peaceful protesters sympathize with the graffiti and fireworks throwers.

I watched multiple nights of livestreams of the Portland protests. I live here. The crowd cheered when cherry bombs were lobbed over the fence. The might shake their heads and talk out of one side of their mouths about only wanting peaceful assembly. But there's enough deep-seated anger there that they'll look the other way when bad actors do bad things, and then they'll decry being grouped in with them with the refrain, "I wasn't the one who lit fire to a building".

Anyway. This is hardly a 'there are fine people on both sides' kind of thing. More like, take any group of people and there'll be a few assholes. Then look at how the group responds to those people.

I based my comment not on who would save civilization (whatever that means) but on who at least tried to reduce division. To me it seems clear that Trump is an outlier in this regard. He actually seeks to divide. You may dislike Obama or W for their politics and policies, but at least they both made an effort.

I do recognize that there will be opposition to policies and that to the extent that the president and party in power work to "save the world" those who are most opposed to those polices will be driven away rather than brought closer. Much as I disliked W (and a lot of that had to go with him losing the popular vote in 2000 and acting as if he hadn't), he did make efforts at reconciliation. Obama perhaps tried *too hard* to reconcile with the other side and with a recalcitrant Congress. Trump doesn't try at all.

I don't know either what will end the divisions (and to be clear, those divisions have always been with us, they've just gotten worse -- they will not end, they will (I hope) be ameliorated). But the president must be a part of the solution, a necessary but probably not sufficient part.

My point is less about the Presidents themselves and more about the people.  Again, Fark being a microcosm, there were people on Fark that got pissed at Obama when he tried to bring us together because they wanted him to be exactly like Trump is now.  Shove as much of their agenda down the other side's throats as possible and whenever possible.  The political division in the populace is getting wider and wider and I don't think that who the President is matters.
