Newegg Now Uses ChatGPT AI to Suggest PC Builds

Just tell it what you want, and it'll offer up a suggested rig, but beware of the typical AI flubs.

The next time you need to build a computer, why not ask another computer to do it for you? That's Newegg's new pitch in a nutshell. The online retailer has rolled out ChatGPT integration throughout the site, including as part of its PC builder tool. Now, you can ask the AI to pick parts and buy them, secure in the knowledge that a sophisticated AI would never make a mistake. Except that it does, and you'll still have to do your own research to check the AI's work.

Newegg has slapped ChatGPT into several website features, including customer service chat, text descriptions, and the PC builder. To access the AI-assisted part picker, head to Newegg's site and look for the link in the top navigation bar. This will give you a search box with a button labeled "build with AI." Just tell the computer what you want in a computer, and it'll suggest some parts.

We took the AI for a spin, asking it for several different configurations. When asking for a $2,000-3,000 PC with a Core i9 and an RTX 40-series GPU, the AI returned something that technically fits the query, but it does make some perplexing choices. For example, using a last-gen Intel CPU despite having plenty of budget left over and recommending DDR4 RAM for a DDR5 motherboard.

Newegg's ChatGPT PC builder seems to get more confused when you saddle it with a tighter budget. Asking for a sub-$1,000 gaming PC with a few must-haves resulted in a build that was $200 over budget despite the availability of cheaper but comparable parts. Other times it failed to come up with any suggestions.

The AI builder's shortcomings aren't a shock—we've seen ChatGPT make its fair share of mistakes, and Newegg does say this service is in beta. Although, it does give you a decent starting place if you have only a vague idea of what you want. You'll still have to look at all the parts to make sure they're compatible, and the AI doesn't have any concept of PC building nuances, like ensuring there's enough case clearance for video cards and heat sinks.

The suggested builds can be added to your list for further consideration. This allows you to rectify any errors before adding things to your cart. The AI will probably improve over time, but it's not ready to handle all the legwork for you.
