Demo 2 Mission and Astronauts Bob and Doug

Douglas Gerald Hurley (born October 21, 1966, 53) is an American engineer, former Marine Corps pilot, and current NASA astronaut. He piloted Space Shuttle missions STS-127 (July 2009) and STS-135 (July 2011), the final flight of the Space Shuttle program.

He launched into space for the third time as Commander of Crew Dragon Demo-2, the first crewed spaceflight from American soil since STS-135.

Robert Louis Behnken (born July 28, 1970 in St. Ann, Missouri, 49) is a NASA astronaut, engineer, and former Chief of the Astronaut Office. Bob flew aboard Space Shuttle missions STS-123 (2008) and STS-130 (2010) as a mission specialist, accumulating over 708 hours in space, including 37 hours of spacewalk time. Behnken was Chief of the Astronaut Office from 2012 to 2015.

Hurley and Behnken will work with the crew of Expedition 63 for 30 to 90 days. They should return no later than 28 August 2020.

Docking and undocking operation will be autonomously controlled by the Crew Dragon spacecraft, but monitored by the flight crew in case manual intervention becomes necessary.

  1. Doug Hurley

He was serving as the operations officer when selected for the astronaut
program. Hurley has logged over 5,500 hours in more than 25 different
    types of aircraft.

Hurley is a recipient of the Stephen A. Hazelrigg Memorial Award for
best Test Pilot/Engineer Team, Naval Strike Aircraft Test Squadron. He
was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and various other service awards. He received the NASA Superior Accomplishment Award in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Hurley is married to fellow NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg.

  2. Isn’t it like a pop star? Once they reach the pinnacle of fame they can now just go by a single name, like Elvis, or JLo or someone.

  3. The way astronauts are always referred to by their first names and even nicknames. This despite most being military officers (both Bob and Doug are Colonels). I think Bob also has a PhD.

I guess once you become an astronaut there is really not much need of an ego.
