Why do timeless watches and iconic cars draw in many of the same people?

For as long as I've been covering watches, the design, engineering and cultural links to the automotive world have been bountiful. Sure, watches and cars are essential tools for daily use and getting from A to B on time; that connection is clear. But they can also be a well for appreciation and understanding, one with untold depths that can only be plumbed through fastidious but happy learning, all in the name of enthusiasm.

In a recent interview with the automotive publication Marqued, a venture of Porsche Digital, Mr. Ben Clymer and Mr. Eneuri Acosta, two of my colleagues known very well to the HODINKEE audience, discuss one part of this intersection in detail. What is it about certain watch designs – and one German carmaker in particular, Porsche – that have captivated so many of the same people through the years? The interview flows out a bit from the confines of watches and cars to touch on multi-generational brands more broadly, and how continuity of design tends to bring people back, and together.

It's an interesting subject, and one I thought HODINKEE readers would enjoy digging into with a cup of coffee this Saturday morning.
