We are about to see Ben go from being the person everybody is talking about to the person who is talking about everybody.

UFC star Ben Askren wants you to know ... he's retiring, NOT DYING -- and he's got big plans for his life after MMA. The 35-year-old says a hip injury is forcing him to cut his fighting career short -- which sucks -- but Askren says, "My life didn't effin' end! I'm ready to go destroy my next project!"

So, what's on deck for Askren? A lot ... from opening wrestling gyms to coaching, to a possible on-air MMA commentary career.

"I think there's a chance," says Askren. "I think I'm gonna give it a try."

"I've got a lot of people encouraging me to give it a try. I'm still not sure if I'm gonna like it or not. I'm up for debate on that one."

As for a possible fighting future, Askren says his medical condition will PROBABLY keep him from taking another pro bout ... but he's been speaking to other wrestlers who've been through the same situation, and there's hope.

Askren says he's spoken with guys who have fully recovered from the procedure he's planning to get, which is encouraging -- but he's certainly not committing to a comeback.

Good for him. Never understood the rabid Askren haters.

He has a terrible voice so no.

Isn't the operation he's having the same sort of thing Andy Murray had? Ok tennis isn't quite the same thing but he's back playing and winning.

God, I hope not. I don't know what it is but I despise listening to him talk. It probably has something to do with sounding like he has marbles stuck in his cheeks, and also not being nearly as funny as he thinks he is.

I don't see him doing well in a commentating job at all. He knows wrestling but that is it.

*Fighter throws right hook

Ben Askren's striking knowledge "Wow what a nice jab"

Yeah, I can't see how he'd analyse stand up at all.

Mind you I didn't think Brian Stann would be good at talking about the grappling aspect, but he was excellent.

I partially agree, his voice isn't exactly the best, but i think one'd get used to it and other than that he's a clever and witty guy, so why not give it a shot?

I think he would be very good. Be worth giving him a trial.

I think he'd be a lot like Felder and just make every scenario about himself in a roundabout way. They can't help themselves.

I would listen. He tends to kind of stammer or talk really fast but he is knowledgeable and has some spunk about him (no homo).

"really surprised he didn't just clumsily wander face first into a career ending knee there, Joe. Seems like it would have been the smart thing to do."

His voice is annoying to me, his personality as well and his striking knowledge sucks. I don't think dana would want to give him a job either
