A potential No. 1 contender’s matchup at 135-pounds is being targeted for December.

Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans confirmed to MMA Fighting that a fight between Rob Font and Jose Aldo is in the works to headline the UFC’s event on Dec. 4, which is expected to take place at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas. Verbal agreements are in place for the pivotal bantamweight contest, which was first revealed on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.

Font, who is No. 5 in the MMA Fighting Global Rankings, has won four straight and five of six as he looks to take another step toward a title shot. The New England Cartel standout returned from an ACL injury this past December and knocked out Marlon Moraes in the first round at UFC Vegas 17. Font would move on to headline his first card, dominating Cody Garbrandt over 25 minutes to earn a unanimous decision.

After a three-fight skid, Aldo has found his stride in a new weight class. Following a split decision loss to Marlon Moraes and a fifth-round TKO loss to Petr Yan at UFC 251 for the vacant bantamweight title, the No. 6 ranked 135er in MMA Fighting’s global rankings bounced back with back-to-back unanimous decision wins over Marlon Vera and Pedro Munhoz.
