Israel Adesanya Apologizes for 9-11 Reference at UFC 248 Press Conference

Israel Adesanya is owning up to the verbal misstep he made during Friday’s UFC 248 press conference in Auckland, New Zealand.

At the event, the middleweight champion directed some ill-advised trash talk toward upcoming opponent Yoel Romero, as he referenced one of the biggest tragedies in American history.

“He’s human like anyone else, and everyone likes to make this myth about, ‘Oh, he’s steel, like kicking steel,’ or you hit him and he doesn’t fall,” Adesanya said of Romero. “I’ll touch him enough times.

“I’ll touch him enough times and eventually he’ll crumble like the Twin Towers.”

Adesanya was referring to terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11, 2001 that left nearly 3,000 people dead after two planes slammed crashed into the buildings. Since then, “The Last Stylebender” has faced plenty of backlash and criticism for his poor choice in words.

Adesanya recently apologized for his remarks in a statement on his Instagram story.

“I never made a joke about people dying or made light of the tragic event that was 9/11,” Adesanya wrote. “I was simply rambling and my brain worked faster than my mouth in a moment to [choose] the wrong euphemism. You speak on the mic enough times and you’re bound to miss the mark with some bars.

“I did on this one and for that I’m sorry. I’ll be more careful in future with my words.”

Adesanya will face Romero on March 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. He claimed the middleweight crown with a second-round knockout of Robert Whittaker at UFC 243 and is unbeaten in 18 professional fights.
