Video: Kyle Stewart hurls haymaking uppercut, crumples John Poppie at Cage Warriors 126

Former UFC welterweight Kyle Stewart continued his march back to the promotion that he was once was a part of when he crumpled former “The Ultimate Fighter” competitor John Poppie in violent fashion at Cage Warriors 126.

Cage Warriors 126, which served as the promotion’s American debut, took place Sunday at Humphrey’s Concerts by the Bay in San Diego. The card streamed on UFC Fight Pass with Stewart (14-4) vs. Poppie (10-6) atop the card.

Stewart, 32, defeated Poppie via TKO (punches) at the 4:10 mark of Round 1.

From the beginning of the fight, Stewart came out guns-a-blazing. After some success with punches to the head, Stewart targeted Poppie’s legs with kicks. The fight briefly hit the ground where Stewart landed heavy ground-and-pound.

Poppie eventually created separation and the fight was stood back up. Seconds later, Stewart returned Poppie to the mat with a violent uppercut. The punch, which had tremendous wind-up, came from Stewart’s knees and perfectly split Poppie’s defense. One follow-up shot was the last strike of the fight, as referee Herb Dean swooped in and grabbed Stewart.

Immediately after the victory, Stewart looked into the camera and called out Cage Warriors middleweight champion Matthew Bonner, who does not currently have a fight on the books.

With the victory, Stewart reentered the win column after a loss to Chris Curtis in January. He’s now 3-1 since his UFC release. Meanwhile, Poppie had a two-fight winning streak snapped.
